In February 1943, the United States Army’s Signal Intelligence Service (SIS) launched a secret program with efforts to gather and decrypt (and later exploit) Soviet diplomatic communications. It took nearly two years before American cryptologists were able to break the KGB encryption. The information that was gained – in more than 2,000 messages – provided “insight into Soviet intentions and treasonous activities of government employees” (“VENONA”). The Venona files are most famous for exposing Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, giving indisputable evidence of their association with the American Communist Party and involvement with the Soviet spy ring ("VENONA"). But what exactly made Venona possible? Who was involved? What did the program find? Arlington Hall’s Venona breakthrough in 1943-1946 was purely an analytic accomplishment, which was achieved …show more content…
In the summer of 1949, the Federal Bureau of Investigation gained knowledge that the secret of the construction of the atom bomb had been stolen and had been turned over to the Soviet Union. Further investigation revealed that Julius Rosenberg had begun associating with Ethel Greenglass (later Ethel Rosenberg) around 1932. Both became devoted communists between 1932 and 1935, after which they strongly believed that “nothing was more important than the communist cause.” ("The Atom Spy Case"). David Greenglass, Ethel’s brother, first opposed his sister’s efforts to convert him to communism but ended up joining the Young Communist League at the age of 14. He continued his belief in communism but never ended up joining the Communist Party. He claimed to have been ‘disillusioned with communism’. He realized that communism was being used more as a tool by the Soviets for the purpose of world conquest rather than a means of reaching a panacea. (“The Atom Spy

The first source that will be analysed is a book, Their Day in the Sun: Women of the Manhattan Project, written by Ruth Howes and Caroline Herzenberg who are both physicists and published in 1999. The purpose of this source is to reveal the hidden story of the contribution of women in efforts to develop the atomic bomb. The origin of this source is valuable because the authors have done extensive research into the topic of women in the Manhattan Project and have
Imagine the wicked House of Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) arrest an innocent man. The HUAC does not arrest the man because he has committed a murder, but because he is a communist. Many communists became victims of HUAC in the Red Scare crisis of the 1950s. These communists made the right decision to speak out for their freedom and against injustice. These communists also spoke out for their freedom of different beliefs.
In foreign affairs, the President and his advisers established many of the basic foundations of America foreign policy, especially in American-Soviet relations, that would guide the nation in the decades ahead. The all-male group of screenwriters, producers and directors (Alvah Bessie, Herbert Biberman, Lester Cole, Edward Dmytryk, Ring Lardner Jr., John Howard Larson, Albert Maltz, Samuel Ornitz, Adrian Scott and Dalton Trumbo) refused to cooperate with the investigation and used their HUAC appearances to denounce the committee’s tactics. Legislators defeated, for instance, a measure for national compulsory health insurance. The most infamous case began in August 1948, when a self-confessed former member of the American Communist Party named
April 3, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his Mountaintop speech, “Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I 'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God 's will. … I may not get there with you.
Response to Senator McCarthy’s “Enemies From Within Speech” With anti-communism being the dominant political issue during the Cold War, hysteria and paranoia spread throughout the minds of Americans. The “Enemies From Within Speech” delivered at Wheeling, West Virginia in 1950 by Senator Joseph McCarthy focused on worsening that national fear. Senator McCarthy used ethos, metaphor, and hyperbole to create the notion of disloyalty within the federal government. In order to persuade the American public in a convincing way, Senator McCarthy appeals to their ethics.
He knows that if he declares that he is a communist that he will be letting down countless people. He found the bravery he needed go against the
Hitler’s Life Leading Up to The Way Leading up to Hitler’s death he had lived an extraordinary life starting in Austria and ending in Berlin. Hitler had changed his regular life into an extreme life in matter of years. During that time, there had been over 20 attempts on his life. (History 1)
He said that at least 205 members of the State Department were members of the communist party. This was after it was released to the public that a couple named Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were secretly communist spies who were staying in the U.S., stealing nuclear weapon secrets. With McCarthy’s remarks such as “They [a communist spy] could even be your neighbor!’ scarring the American public’s mind, many were on edge.
“ In my will it will one day be written that nothing is to be engraved on my tombstone but ‘Adolf Hitler’, I shall create my own title for myself in my name itself” (Marrin, Cover). Hitler, by Albert Marrin, explains that Hitler ultimately did make a name for himself, but not a very good one. He is known as the initiator of World War ll or the person who began the biggest genocide in history. Starting off as a young creative boy, Hitler found joy in art and eventually tried to become an art major. One obstacle he faced eventually created a life of fear as he lived in the shadows while also struggling with the challenge of poverty.
In the end, it didn’t work out and he left the Communist Party, but the important thing is that he stood up for

In this article, Claudia Barnett explains the purpose in existence of Ethel Rosenberg’s ghost on Roy Cohn’s deathwatch and the play of Angels in America. “Ethel is a manifestation not of a mental disorder but of theatrical magic, and she’s arrived not to shed light on Roy’s character but to illuminate herself. She is a ghost of her own agency” (135). Claudia Barnett is also an English professor at the Middle Tennessee State University and teaches playwriting. Her experience in analyzation of different playwrights helps her competency in making an article about one of the very controversial person, Ethel Rosenberg in the drama of Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America a gay fantasia on national themes”.
