In James Baldwin’s “Letter to my nephew”, he communicates to his nephew, that he needs to have enough courage to fight segregation of the 60s. No matter the hardships, that may come as the result of him pursuing something he believes in. “To act is to be committed and to be committed is to be in danger.”from Baldwin’s letter mimics Atticus’ definition of “courage”. According to atticus courage is standing up for what is right, never considering the backlash that may come.

Even though whites and blacks didn 't like each other at all in this time period Cassie still would show that she wants to make a difference.
Courage is shown through actions of people. Through the adventure of Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry, by, Mildred D.Taylor Cassie Logan shows a lot of courage by standing up for what's right. Courage is strength in the face of physical pain, hardship or death. It is also the choice and willingness to confront shame and personal loss. In Harper Lee's novel 'To Kill a Mockingbird', people demonstrate courage by standing up against prejudice, and overcoming their own loneliness and fears to live a good life. Mrs Dubose faces up to her morphine addiction. Atticus faces down the racism of the town. Jem shows his courage in trying to protect his sister. Harper Lee believes that courage requires perseverance and fearlessness in risking a life to save another.
“Courage is not the absence of fear but the acquired ability to move beyond fear” (-Unknown). Courage is a person who steps up to do something they don’t want to regardless of what other people think of them. In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird the novel highlights themes such as, racial injustice, improper judgement, thinking in other perspectives and lots of courageous acts through the use of her many characters. Atticus is a character of courage in a way he steps up to defend an black man,Tom Robinson, in a tough case. But there is another character who goes by the name of Mr. Dolphus Raymond who showed more courage because he, a white man, married a black woman at the time of racial injustice when not all whites respected blacks. Atticus tells Jem, “...to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.” (Lee 112) In this novel Harper Lee chose to define courage as a person who has the strength to do something that they are either afraid of or know others may not accept it courage is mistaken for a heroic figure. Mr. Dolphus Raymond is courageous because of his beliefs, actions, and words.
What is courage? Many ask this question, but get various answers. Webster Dictionary states that courage is the mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. Douglass is one of many people that are a living definition for this word. Douglas showed courage in many ways like by asking Mrs. Auld to teach him how to read, stealing Master Thomas’s notebook to help him learn how to write, and writing in his journal about the hardships of his life.
Courage doesn 't just help you it can also help other people around you too. Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, Mildred D. Taylor uses Cassie Logan as an example of courage, although she has faced many rough and harsh times she has used courage to overcome them. Cassie faces many challenges but some of the ones that stood out to me were, standing up to the teacher when Little Man did not want his book because of the condition that it was in, standing up for herself at the Mercantile when she was not waited on, and T.J when he was not being so nice to Cassie and the Loganś. Cassie was a very smart and intelligent person. She always wanted to know what was going on because she wanted to know if there was something that she could do to help. Cassie could always come up with a way to help
Courage can be found where it is least expected. In her book, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Mildred Taylor uses Cassie as an example courage. Courage is the ability to do something, even though you are frightened of doing it, which Cassie shows a lot throughout the book. Cassie is a little girl, who is very smart, sassy, and courageous. She stands up for what she believes and helps others that need a voice. Cassie showed courage when she stood up to Mr. Barnett, tried to help Little Man by explaining his actions, and helping T.J. when he betrayed their family. She has shown that is very courageous and outspoken girl by standing up for things that she believed, even if she knew what was going to happen to her for her speaking out. Also, she helps others if they do not deserve it or if they are in real trouble.
In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout, Calpurnia, and Atticus stand out when courage comes to mind. These characters show courage in many unique ways with different situations. In the early 1930s, in the deep south, racial discrimination was a huge conflict, for example, the Jim Crows Laws were in play, and it legalized segregation between blacks and whites. Courage isn’t always shown in situations, but simply throughout growing up.
Courage has gone through many changes. It has been altered throughout races, cultures, religions, sex, and time. However, the core values of courage has always remained parallel. It is difficult to explain in words the meaning of courage, like describing a color, but everyone knows what courage is, how it feels, and how to perform it. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus explained to us a type of courage that was shown in Ms. Dubose. These attributes were also apparent in a man named Liu Xiaobo. Both Ms. Dubose, and Mr. Liu, rose above social views to fight for their beliefs, did not give up in times of trouble, and had the audacity to face demons that were far more powerful than themselves.
In Of Mice and Men, George has lots of courage when shooting Lennie. Lennie was his lifelong friend and he had to accept that he would continue to suffer on the earth and knew that his innocence would always get the better of him. His innocence ultimately overpowers his physical strength and George knew that he would not be able to survive in the world, as displayed with the innocent puppy that ends up being killed by Lennie. George and Slim are very upset in the end because no one could really understand Lennie. George always had to explain and he had the courage to do so. Every place that they went, George had the courage to speak up for Lennie because of him being defenseless and not knowing whether something is right or wrong. In the Help, many of the maids have courage to have their writings placed in Skeeter’s book. They often have to stand up for themselves and recognize the racial discrimination in Jackson. Minnie has lots of courage when she gives Hilly the pie because even though she knew of the consequences, she carried through with it to take a stand in what she thought was wrong. Yule May has tons of courage when she confronts Hilly and her husband about getting a little extra money to send her boys to college. In utopia, there would be no discrimination and a friend would normally help a friend out. Even though Yule May helps Hilly all of the time, she receives no help. This courage shows a lot about a desire for people to be more humane and recognize that we are really all the same. The whites ultimately think the blacks are different when in reality they are the same as everyone
The meaning of courage is when one has the mindset that enables them to face fear, difficulty, pain, or danger. Courage or bravery can come out in a person for a number of reasons. When people think of someone as “courageous” they usually think that they have done a huge deed for someone or really made a difference when, in actuality, it sometimes takes a courageous person to profess their love or even admit that they were wrong about something. Most of the efforts made by someone usually require a certain amount of courage. Fear, following one’s heart, standing up for what is right, and facing suffering with dignity and faith all require courage.
Man has always sought after what he deemed a “good life”. A good life is being able to achieve one’s goals, pursuit of happiness, or when life’s blessings outweigh the burdens. Virtues help guide one to become morally excellent and live a fulfilling life. A virtue can be a behavior, personality trait, or habit that affects one’s emotions, perceptions and choice in life.
