Although slavery was declared over after the passing of the thirteenth amendment, African Americans were not being treated with the respect or equality they deserved. Socially, politically and economically, African American people were not being given equal opportunities as white people. They had certain laws directed at them, which held them back from being equal to their white peers. They also had certain requirements, making it difficult for many African Americans to participate in the opportunity to vote for government leaders. Although they were freed from slavery, there was still a long way to go for equality through America’s reconstruction plan.
The Civil War maintained the union and freed the slaves. Reconstruction excluded the political focus on certain areas. However slaves were freed. They gained civil liberties and lost long term racial action. The union needed to effectively bring the south back to position, and the interest in the economy.

How did Reconstruction change life for African Americans? Before Reconstruction, every African’s life was different. Some Africans worked on plantations, which meant they worked from sunrise to sunset, six days a week. They would even get food that wasn’t capable of being eaten. The plantation slaves lived in small shakes that had a dirt floor and little to no furniture.
During the reconstruction phase after the Civil War Southerners and Northerners treated blacks different in many ways and similar in some ways as well. Many of the black began to leave the south in 1877 after the Nicodemus community was created originating in Kentucky. This group of people were enslaved, and forced to work in horrible conditions, for the whole day, without pay. Slaves were one of the main causes of the Civil War. The issue of Slavery, which resulted in the eventual economic and social division between the North and South, caused the creation of the Confederate States. African Americans did not only unintentionally cause the war, but they also effected the outcome of the war, and the eventual consequences the nation would face after the war.
Black codes came into the picture after the civil war. Black codes were mainly used to put black people into a position as similar to slavery as possible. Later, Jim Crow laws came into America. They were used as a way to continue oppressing and separating black people. For hundreds of years, there have been countless laws made to justify devaluing black lives and protect the legality of slavery.
Jim Crow Laws were laws that separates racial groups in Southern United States. These laws began in the 1880s. Places and areas are separated between the whites and blacks. Public waiting rooms, restaurants, theaters, public parks, schools, hospitals, etc.. were segregated. Anything that has lower quality were meant for the blacks.

The years following the Civil war brought about an enormous change to the very threads of our country. Nearly 5 days after the civil war ended, President Lincoln had been assassinated and our country was thrown into a great deal of turmoil, especially because our new president was the racist southerner, Andrew Johnson. We needed to rebuild our country from the death and destruction that had happened during the Civil War and the matter of the rights for the newly freed slaves would become a Pressing Issue in our country. The Civil War and a huge impact on African Americans , entering a new society where they’re free citizens in the United States. Fighting in war to abolish slavery, but in the end that didn’t change anything, as mentioned after the war segregation happened when former confederates pushed segregation. When everything went backwards, African Americans couldn’t do many things… once again, they couldn’t vote, enroll in school, travel freely, they would get arrested, beaten or even killed if caught. Back to having no rights, African Americans were frustrated and angry, they were fighting for basic civil rights. Why was it that a war still couldn’t end all segregation?
Post Civil War, African Americans started to gain rights to gain rights, and soon gain rights equal to whites. While there were some people/things standing in their way (KKK, Black Codes), in the end they got what they needed; Equality. Many acts and laws were passed to aid the new rights now held by African Americans, as well as the numerous people willing to help. New Amendments were added to give African Americans rights after the war, all giving them some equal rights to whites. The first of the three added was the Thirteenth Amendment, it gave African Americans freedom from slave owners, and stated that no one could be kept as a slave in the U.S..
That was just one of the guides blacks had to follow. Another was “Blacks were not allowed to show public affection toward one another in public, especially kissing, because it offended whites”. Blacks were basically treated as lesser humans and sometime treated like dogs. If blacks did not follow these laws to the exact they were severely punished and usually always did not have a fair trial.
In the years of the Civil War, African Americans played an important role in contributing to the Union Army and the confederate army. A great deal of African American men volunteered to join the Union Army but only after they gained freedom did they participate in fighting the war. Besides the Union Army, there was the confederate army which consisted of slave labor whom were forced to aid the confederacy following their masters. Later in the war, the Confederacy ran short on men and were in need to supply soldiers, leaving no choice but to enlist the colored men. Not only were African American men impacted from the war, but African American women also served to supply and aid in the war.
