March of Dimes When we had to decide about what organization we wanted to do our report on, I was very excited to discover that March of Dimes was on the list. I have always been a large supporter of this organization. One of the reasons that I love it was because I was born a month and a half early. I have always loved the work that they do for premature babies. March of Dimes is a nonprofit organization. It is well known for its work for premature newborns and their mothers. According to David Rose “March of Dimes started out in 1938. At the time it was known as National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. The organization has evolved to fighting the premature rate of birth” (Rose). The name of the organization may have changed, buts its fundamental mission has not. March of Dimes wants to insure the continuing health of infants and their mothers through research. You can find the March of Dimes chapters across the country. They also want to ensure the health of the child while it is still in the womb. A mother is the champion of her child. But what happens when the child dies? On the spotlight page on their official website it states that “Jill Wood lost her first child to an undiagnosed metabolic birth defect. In 2002 both she and her husband testified before Congress in support of the Newborn Screening Saves Lives Act. In 2008 the bill was signed and in 2010 national guidelines were issued to promote screening babies for life-threatening disorders” (“Jill”). March of Dimes wants to show the world that medicine is changing. New disorders and bacterial agents are being discovered, and the children of the future are at risk.
