Parents have a larger responsibility over their own youth than the government having a responsibility over all of our youth. According to James Alan Fox in Mass Shootings in America: Moving Beyond Newtown, parents have the biggest responsibility over their kids playing violent video games. “To the extent that youngsters spend endless hours being entertained by violence says more about the lack of parental supervision and control. It isn 't that the entertainment media are so powerful; it is that our other institutions - family, school, religion, and neighborhood - have grown weaker with respect to socializing children…” Fox is trying to get at one thing here, and this is that we may think these violent video games were made to be addicting
More than hundreds of mass shootings have occurred in America this year alone. One of the deadliest shootings happened just four months ago in Orlando and CNN states “At least 49 people are killed and more than 50 are injured. Police shoot and kill Mateen
In recent years, the American public has been continually plagued by mass shootings; events where an individual, or individuals, with access to firearms, open fire on people, committing seemingly nonsensical acts of violence. Compared to other developed countries the United States holds the highest rates of gun violence and mass shootings, both of which are complex issue that affects American regardless of socioeconomic status. Although the definition of a mass shooting varies depending on the organization, the most widely recognized definition is one used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); as defined by FBI a mass shooting is an incident where at least four persons are killed or injured with a firearm in a random act with little
According to “Number of Deaths in 2018,” so far there has been over 45 successful or attempted mass shootings in America this year - in only midway of March, 2018. And school shootings have averaged about a little more than once a week in 2018 currently. People will and have died or been injured from this gun violence. In “Guns in the US: The Statistics behind the Violence,” a study done in 2012 states 60% of homicides in America were from gun violence, and the number has grown these past few years as gun ownership and population has increased; and the number will continue to increase unless laws change. The huge rate of gun violence being the cause of death puts in prospective how guns are used to do more harm than good or
Mental illness significantly affects many around the world. In fact, about four-hundred and fifty million people worldwide suffer from one or more of the different known mental illnesses. That is one in every four people. Severe mental health issues such as severe anxiety disorder, antisocial personality disorder, schizophrenia, or sensory perception disorder are illnesses which are common among the people responsible for the numerous mass shootings in America. Many believe the possession of firearms in the hands of the mentally ill are the real cause of mass shootings. I agree with this statement. However, I do not solely blame the criminal for their actions due to their mental illness. Creating stricter gun laws, expanding mental health awareness
Have been assassinated in cold blood with weapons that are not logical for anyone; a regular citizen to own. For instance an AR-15, the style of the gun which was used to open fire on students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting in Parkland, Florida. In result left seventeen dead without justice and fourteen injured. Just seven weeks into 2018, there have been eight mass shootings at U.S school that have ended in tragedy
Everytown for Gun Safety reported that there have been 290 school shootings since the catastrophic massacre in Newtown, Conn., more than five years ago. However, very few of these were anything to Sandy Hook or Parkland. Sure, they all involved a school of some type (including technical schools and colleges) as well as a firearm, but the outcomes were hardly similar. Nearly half of the 290 were completed or attempted suicides, accidental discharges of a gun, or shootings with not a single individual being injured. Of the remainder, the vast majority involved either one fatality or none at all (Alan).
7:15 A.M., Emily Hilscher arrives at her dormitory on the Virginia Tech campus. In a matter of minutes, resident dorm adviser, Ryan Christopher Clark is dead, and Hilscher is fatally wounded. 7:30 A.M. Investigators arrive following a 911 emergency call reporting a shooting. 9:40 A.M. The attacker begins to open fire using a .22 caliber Walther P22 and 9 millimeter Glock 19 handgun. 9:45 A.M. Police appear on scene after receiving a second urgent call reporting a gunman in Norris Hall. When forces reach there, they encounter a front door chained from the inside and hear shots from the second floor. 9:50 A.M. By the time officers enter the building, the firing had stop, and the gunman, Seung-Hui Cho, is found dead from a self-inflicted shot
As of now in 2017 the world is different and more complex. Massacres and terrorists attack rome many cities and people are now fearful of the lives. As of recently, one of the biggest American massacres has happened according to USAToday,”With at least 59 dead and with about 400 injured, the incident is the worst mass shooting in modern American history. The prior mass shooting with the highest death toll was an attack at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla., in June 2016 in which 49 people were killed and 58 injured.” But back in 2000, criminal treaty were just being established and the Immigration and Naturalization Service was protecting the jailed immigrants instead of trying to throw them out. What happen to the world?
After 2006 there has been a distinct rise in mass shootings, this is evident with tragic example like Sandy Hook Elementary and Virginia Tech University. These incidents are
Deadliest shooting occurs at a gay night club in Orlando, critics say it is worse than 9/11. On the night of June 12, 2016, gunman Omar Mateen traveled to the Pulse gay night club with a pistol and assault rifle around 2 a.m. Sunday and started shooting. During the attack, Mateen calls 911 and begins to pledge his allegiance to ISIS. Many people would call this a hate crime but it is deeper and higher than a hate crime when you intentionally took not one person but dozens of lives. Rumor has it, that he had much more going on in life, but when he saw two men kissing it set it him off. Additionally, I do not understand why he would want to kill 49 people because of his own screwed up beliefs, but the twist to the story is the Pulse nightclub manager said he saw Mateen there, many times but people called him the weird guy. Furthermore, was Mateen going to the
According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been 1,516 mass shootings in 1,735 days. Furthermore, not every shooting has a large number of victims. The most commonplace shootings target individuals. While working at RefugeeOne, I met a refugee client who was only thirteen years old and was shot twice in his back while
Gun Violence At a recent high school football game, a line of excited fans were waiting to purchase tickets when, all of a sudden, loud bursts exploded in the sky. Frantic parents and children scattered in all directions only to realize fireworks were being displayed to celebrate "Senior Night" at Nettleton High School. The sad fact is that daily, the news is filled with stories about mass shootings in schools, theaters, malls, and other places. Innocent lives are being taken by gun violence and nobody seems to have answers.
A mass fatality is more bodies that can be handled by the local authorities. There is no minimum number to be considered a mass casualty because some communities are more populated than others. Mass fatalities can derive from natural disaster, traffic accident, a plane crash, and mass shootings. A catastrophic mass fatality is likely to trigger disaster declarations at the state and federal level, and a national disaster declaration will mobilize an array of resources to support state and local response and recovery efforts.
Holding Police Accountable for their Killings of Unarmed People of Color Fruitvale Bart Station is where I begin and end my day. The infamous platform in Oakland, California where bart police murdered Oscar Grant, a fully restrained unarmed African American who was celebrating New Year 's Day with his friends and girlfriend. Johannes Mehserle, the police officer involved in the shooting was convicted of involuntary manslaughter. Thus, having to spend the minimum two years in prison but being he had time served he only would only spend seven months in jail with possible bail. Murder?
