Bernice Irene Bilyeu left her mark on the world over many years. She lived to be a 105 years old and survived through many hardships. Bernice was always kind and greeted everyone with a smile. She was a very hardworking woman, and the best great-grandmother anyone could have Bernice was born on November 18, 1906. She was the daughter of Jackson Bilyeu and Wilhelmine (Minnie) Sorg.
She was 15 years old. She lived with her grandparents because of her mother and father in the war. Mila was always working. She was either helping with supply’s or with the wounded. One day her husband came in, he was wounded!
Officially, she is the second woman to hold the title of governor in the state of Texas. However, Dorothy Ann Willis Richards is regarded by many as the first woman who earn the election for Texas's top office of governor. Thanks to many years of volunteering in numerous gubernatorial campaigns, because she was the first woman to become Travis County commissioner twice, and since she was also the first woman to serve as state treasurer, the 45th Governor of Texas earned her title. For these reasons and many more, Ann Richardson, as she was better known, won the race 1990 gubernatorial race against Clayton Williams, fair and square. Unlike former governor Miriam "Ma" Ferguson, who is often disregarded as the stand in for impeached governor James "Pa" Ferguson, Mrs. Richardson dedicated many years of her life to the local and state government, prior to her race for governor (Brandeis University).
Melba Pattilo Beals is an African American woman, who was born on December 7, 1941. Warriors Don’t Cry is was memoir of Beals’ encounter in the Civil Right Era. With memorable encounters with the Little Rock 9, who were a group of 9 African American students who were enrolled to Central High in Little Rock, Arkansas. Central High was an all-white school before the integration. Leading up to the integration, Beals’ childhood was extremely painful encounters, which no child should experience in their childhood.

Mary Musgrove helped this improve this situation when Georgia was being founded in the seventeenth century. Her blended background gave her skills that helped her bridge both groups. Born in 1700 in South Carolina, Mary Musgrove 's original name was Cousaponakeesa. Her father was white and worked as a trader.
Within 8 days after the death of Medora Butler, Delaney and Easter welcomed their eighth child, a girl. It is interesting to note that they named child number eight Medora Ann Jackson, born the 6th of May 1868. Medora Butler died April 27th, 1868.

The Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education paved the way for a new level of opportunity for others that followed by making segregation in schools illegal, providing better conditions in the classroom, and providing African American students with more opportunities for the future. In the summer of 1950, 13 African Americans parents tried to enroll their children in an all-white school for the upcoming year. They were of course denied, being that at the time schools were segregated. One particular child really stood out in this case, his name was Linda Brown. Brown had to travel a large distance to attend Monroe Elementary--one of the four black elementaries in the town.
The film “Dear White People” written and produced by Justin Simien is based on a campus culture war at an ivy league University. The University mainly consisting of white students causes mayhem when a Halloween party occurs and actions take things too far. Justin focused on four black students, their encounters and interactions with their peers. One character in particular brings me to my topic of race. Samantha White, a biracial student who is set on fixing things on campus between white and black students.
Edith Borroff was born in New York City, on August 2, 1925. Her father and mother both musicians and very popular at that, were Marie Bergerson and Ramon Borroff. Her parents were very accomplished pianist. Her mother graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelors and also a Masters. She then went on to receive her Ph.D from Yale University.
Harriet Ann Jacobs is the first Afro-American female writer to publish the detailed autobiography about the slavery, freedom and family ties. Jacobs used the pseudonym Linda Brent to keep the identity in secret. In the narrative, Jacobs appears as a strong and independent woman, who is not afraid to fight for her rights. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl was published in 1961, but was unveiled almost 10 years later due to the different slave narrative structure. Frequently, the slave narratives were written by men where they fight against the slavery through literacy by showing their education.
Susan B. Anthony (Susan Brownell Anthony) Susan B. Anthony was a prominent feminist author who started the movement of women’s suffrage and she was also the president of the National American Women Suffrage Association. Anthony was in favor of abolitionism as she was a fierce activist in the anti-slavery movement before the civil war. Susan Anthony was born on February 15, 1820, in Adams, Massachusetts, and before becoming a famous feminist figure, she worked as a teacher. Anthony grew up in a Quaker family that made her spend her time working on social causes. And her father was an owner of a local cotton mill.
Although some people might argue that Shirley Chisholm does not demonstrate leadership qualities, a closer examination proves that the former congresswoman was a strong leader because of her independence, perseverance,and willingness to take risks. Shirley Chisholm is a great leader because she blazed a trail by being the first African American Congresswoman. For example, “Chisholm indulged her maverick nature in a spectacular gesture. She became the first black woman to run for president” (Morin pg1).This proves that she was the first black individual in her field to run for president so this makes her a trailblazer because all leaders should possess this for the reason that no leader can lead from behind.
Miriam Makeba, a South African born musician, contributed her efforts towards the struggle of apartheid. She composed songs in correspondence to severe matters South Africans had to deal with. During her exile she created an increase of awareness of the hardships that black South Africans faced. Makeba was involved in several campaigns and the movements against apartheid and racial segregation. Miriam Makeba was born on the 4th of March in Johannesburg 1932.
