“The Story of an Hour” is a short story written by Kate Chopin. It is about a woman named Mrs. Mallard, who had to be informed of her husband’s death very carefully because she had a heart condition. After her sister notified her of the accident her husband was in, she cried and locked herself in her room until she started to accept and appreciate her new-found independence. When Mrs. Mallard came out of the room and walked downstairs with her sister, to her surprise, her husband walked in the front door. Mrs. Mallard had a heart attack from an overwhelming amount of shock and joy.
Exposition Its starts off in a small American town, introducing the Kellers and their neighbors. Starting with eerie destruction of Larry's tree, and the surprise appearance of Ann, creating a tense environment. Conflict, rising action, complication Chris reveals his intentions with Ann to his father. But if Kate and Joe give their blessing, they're admitting that Larry's really gone. Chris's announcement begins to make the old conflicts come to the surface.
This passage occurs as more and more people begin to disappear from Holmes’s hotel in the midst of the World’s Fair including waitresses, stenographers, and even a male physician. Larson's purpose in this passage is to depict Holmes's insanity and psychopathic tendencies as he murders several guests at his hotel. Employing a vivid sense of diction, Larson details Holmes’s methods of murder; he uses words such as “gorging,” “proximity,” “death,” and “panic,” to characterize Holmes’s preferences, including the fact that he avoids bloody murder (like the notorious Jack the Ripper) and enjoys being near his victims while they are on the brink of death. When he murders, Holmes feels a sense of, “possession,” over his victim and believes it is “satisfying.” The vault in which Holmes murdered most of his victims “deadened,” most of the sound- but not all, and when his hotel was full of guests Holmes would, “settle,” for more silent means, explains

Stockett uses pathos, ethos, and logos in her book, since the book about social injustice. The topics in the book range from inequality of the sexes to social classes and racism, Stockett is successful in getting the reader to reflect while reading the book and the themes of the book have a clear presence. We see Stockett use ethos and pathos in the very first chapters when we learn that Hilly doesn't like Minny and Minny doesn't want to say why at first, but the incident with Ms. Holbrook was affecting her chances of getting a job because of the influence Hilly has over this suburban society. In some instances where Stockett uses ethos, pathos is also included in her writing.
In Cicero’s On Duties, Cicero conveys his message through an epistolary format, pathos, and inductive reasoning (rhetorical advice) by showing the audience how a man’s duties are to be conducted with moral guidance and supreme goodness. Cicero writes On Duties in an epistolary format; in other words, he writes it in a letter. There are historical and family implications to his message. First, there was a major civil war going on after the assassination of Julius Caesar. Cicero, a supporter of the Roman Republic, was constantly persecuted by political enemies, such as Mark Antony.
Unbroken The author wrote this story to inform the reader of the life of Louis Zamperini, while also telling the story in an entertaining way. Hillenbrand demonstrated the main idea throughout the book by using rhetorical devices such as diction, syntax, imagery, and tone. Hillenbrand’s use of these rhetorical devices contribute to the book Unbroken by emphasizing the main character, Louis “Louie” Zamperini’s, life before, during, and after becoming a prisoner of war.

M&M’s were modeled after Forrest Mars, owner of the Mars candy company found while he was in Spain during the 1930s. During the Spanish Civil War, Mars observed soldiers eating small chocolate pellets covered in a candy shell, which prevented the candies from melting in the soldier’s pockets in warm climates. This is what inspired Mars to create the candy-coated chocolate in 1941. The company’s famous slogan, “Melts in your mouth, not in your hand”, reflect this concept.

Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
Rhetorical appeals reveal the hidden message the character is trying to convey. The rhetoric also highlights the character’s emotions, feelings and the significance of the text. It allows readers to gain a better understanding of the characters. Arthur Miler, the author of The Crucible, highlights the importance of mass hysteria through rhetorical appeals. John Proctor, the tragic hero is a loyal, honest, and kind-hearted individual.
In this passage, Ezekiel Cheever responds to John Proctor’s curiosity about what a needle in a poppet signifies and why his wife Elizabeth is being accused of using witchcraft against Abigail Williams. Cheever’s response explains his knowledge of how Abigail was afflicted, his possession of strong evidence against Elizabeth Proctor as a court official, and both his and the town of Salem’s tendency to turn to superstition to explain mysterious events. As Cheever explains how Abigail was afflicted by the needles from the poppet, he utilizes a simile when he states that Abigail fell to the floor, after being stabbed, “like a struck beast” (74). Cheever says this to emphasize the abruptness and intensity of the situation and how significant it is that there is no visual perception of anyone
In this passage, Charlotte Perkins Gilman highlights the theme that women must use their intellect or go mad through the use of literary qualities and writing styles. Gilman also uses the use of capital letters to portray the decline in the narrators’ sanity. This shows the decline in the sanity of a person because the words in all-caps is shown as abrupt, loud remarks. Gilman uses this method multiple times in her short story and this method was used twice in this passage. When the narrator wrote, “LOOKING AT THE PAPER!”, the major decline in her mental health was shown.
Doritos were first introduced in 1968 by Frito-Lays. From 1968 until now Doritos have used many advertisements to promote their product. Over the years, Doritos has become a successful company and is known for their different flavors chips. During 1995 and 2013, Doritos created two different Super Bowl commercials that are broken down between their target audience, historical context, media choices/composition of advertisement and rhetorical appeals. In these commercials there are three rhetorical appeals being presented: logos, ethos, and pathos.
Rhetorical Analysis of J.K. Rowling Harvard Speech J.K. Rowling is an author who is known worldwide for her Harry Potter series. In 2008 she was selected to be the honorary speaker at the Harvard graduation ceremony. She makes connections with the audience by mentioning her book, using strategies such as repetition and juxtaposition, and also by throwing the audience into her past where she commemorates the struggles and triumphs she has endured since her own college experiences. She uses her past as an instrument to display the things she has learned throughout her years as well as to advise students to use knowledge constructively in the future.
