Associations representing the professional organization are tasked with the duty of developing and tailoring a code of ethics to assist its members to understand expectations in their professional role. Each association considers the relation of the health professional obligations and constructs a code of ethics to serve as guidance to the professional.

As a social work student, we are provided with the foundational education necessary to succeed in our profession. The National Association of Social Work (NASW) Code of Ethics is the most significant publication because it “is intended to serve as a guide to the everyday professional conduct of social workers” (NASW Code of Ethics, 2017). For this assignment, we are charged with exploring other professional codes of ethics to gain a better understanding of how they may be similar or differ from one another. Therefore, I choose to explore the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics with the intention of conducting a comparison analysis of both documents.

The seven core values of the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct are different kind of commitments that we have to follow in order to be in a field of any early childhood care and education. The seven values are: Appreciate childhood as a unique and valuable stage of the human life cycle., Base our work on knowledge of how children develop and learn., Appreciate and support the bond between the child and family, recognize that children are best understood and supported in the context of family, culture, community and society., Respect the dignity, work and uniqueness of each individual., Respect diversity in children, families ,and colleagues., And finally, Recognize that children and adults achieve their full potential in the context of relationships that are based on trust and respect.

Throughout the past couple decades there has been an extreme growth in the amount of technology and advancements in medicine. Alongside advancement in the medical field, social media and communication outlets such as Facebook and Twitter have gained popularity in unison. Social media and information outlets have proven through the extreme use by the general population to be a helpful and beneficial outlet for many patients and others alike. Information available online has provided a channel for potential patients to view and receive knowledge without the anxiety of meeting with a physician or medical professional. Planning is transforming socially, but to achieve change it has to bring together, politicians, planners, and residents (Sandercock, 2004). Citizen’s opinions and rights should be taken into consideration. It is the number one rule in the planning process for participants. It says, “recognize the rights of citizens to participate in planning decisions” (Ethical, n.d.). Cities cannot progress unless they change their ways of doing things. To find out how a city is actually doing it has to see itself from an outside prospective. They will most of the time see that what they though was normal is actually something they grew accustomed to. A way that can lead to planners being progressive is to use a therapeutic approach. This approach involves “the “whole person” to be present in negotiations and deliberations, but being prepared to acknowledge and deal with the powerful emotions that underpin many planning issues” (Sandercock, 2004).

The North Carolina State Board of Education outlines the professional standards to which teaches should uphold within, and even outside of, the classroom. These standards are comprised of the commitment to the student, commitment to the school, and commitment to the profession. Also, the Code of Ethics includes the professional conduct which entails, honesty, the acknowledgement of the rights of others, keeping information confidential, and compliance of criminal laws (NC State Board of Education, 1998). Ultimately, the NC Code of Ethics is a set of rules in which teachers must uphold during their career.

Counselors must be aware of their ethical and legal obligations when providing counseling services, such as those related to crisis prevention and intervention. This knowledge can guide the counselor in making appropriate decisions to best assist the client. The American Counseling Association Code of Ethics (2014) provides counselors with the core principles of autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice and fidelity to guide them in decisions making. Furthermore, the following ACA (2014) ethical codes are applicable to crisis counseling:

When taking an oath to be a pharmacist, an EMT, or a physician, one takes an oath to serve humanity. Although there is no common law, each individual profession’s code of ethics has a similar purpose, which is to act as a guideline on the professional relationships between colleagues, patients, and others served. The code of ethics is a standard for all individuals in the profession, however there are instances where a person’s individual beliefs may be of conflict, and prevent the adherence of such guidelines. Although the rights of these individuals may be protected under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), there is a responsibility as a medical professional to assist the patients, whether it be directly or indirectly.

When reading the IAMFC Code of Ethics and AAMFT Code of Ethics I found that they compare significantly, much more than they contrast. Many of the principals coincide.
