Abortion is the medical or surgical termination of a pregnancy and is one of the oldest, most common and most controversial medical procedures (Gale 1). Women mainly get abortions if they are young, pressured responsibly, or if they do not have enough money to support it. There are many options on how to terminate a pregnancy. The first, early non-surgical abortion, is preformed when the woman is in the first 2-10 weeks of her pregnancy. This is where a drug is given to stop the development of the pregnancy.
However, less than 0.6% of all abortions reported in 2014 were because of rape or incest (Krason 284). However, there are cases where unplanned pregnancies are caused by rape. While rape is a terrible trauma and a morally reprehensible crime, which we can hardly begin to understand, there are alternatives to abortion in the pro-life movement such as counsel, healing, and compassion. In fact, “When women are given the correct counsel and healing, physcological studies have shown that pregnant rape victims progressively change their attitudes about their unborn child from something repulsive to someone who is innocent and worthwhile” (Krason 284). Contrary to popular belief, abortion does not alleviate the trauma of rape victims, it actually brings a trauma of its own.
I think this article written by Douglas Johnson would make a great academic paper because I agree that abortion should be illegal in all fifty states and just because Johnson writes it in his article there are many more authors that claim the same thing and all the supporting evidence that is out there to prove that an unborn fetus can and does feel pain while still in gestation. After reading this article and the evidence provided I now believe that an unborn baby feels just as much pain as a baby that is
Before the 1800’s many women were getting abortions without much persecution. Before the 1800’s when abortion became illegal , many women were getting abortions around the world. Abortion became illegal to women in the 1800 's . After abortion was illegal women found it very hard to get legal abortions by a doctor so they traveled paying a high cost
There are many reasons as to why I think that self induced abortions are unhealthy. One reason why I think that self induced abortions are harmful is because you can die from terminating your own pregnancy. A 1997 government funded record linkage study in Finland found that women who abort are approximately four times more likely to die in the following year compared to women who carry their pregnancies to term (Elliot Institute). Jennifer McKenna Morbelli is an example of this.
According to CNN Health, toxic shock syndrome “is a potentially fatal disease that is caused by bacteria. It is a form of blood poisoning that results when poisons (toxins) are released by the suspect bacteria” (CNN). These toxins can have deadly effects on the patient. According to reporter Kaitlyn Naples who reported Teen warns others about the dangers of Toxic Shock Syndrome, “Toxic Shock Syndrome first made headlines in 1980 when it was blamed for the deaths of nearly 40 women who used to rely on super absorbent tampons” (Naples). Thankfully, during the 1980’s scientist were able to relate the syndrome back to tampon use.
Abort Abortion Studies have proven 86% of abortions performed in the United States occur due to convenience. The United States Federal Government recognizes the termination of an unborn child as legal, but gives the state governments the option to put regulations on the law if necessary. In Oklahoma abortion has many restrictions and is illegal. In the article “Should abortion be legal?”
Logos: The reason I believe rape victims should be allowed abortion is because it can help them put there assault behind them so they can recover more quickly and avoid the additional trauma of having to give birth to a rapist baby. 47,000 women die each year from unsafe abortion. If we make abortion illegal, those numbers are going to just skyrocket. The reason I think abortion should be legal for rape victims and
What if a person was put in a situation that could cause them overwhelming stress they might not be able to handle? Women are put in this situation all the time. There are a variety of challenges a woman faces while being pregnant. A woman could face emotional concerns, overwhelming fear, loss of job, or loss of her own life. While an abortion can bring stress a woman should still be given the choice.
Abortion is a huge argument in the world today. “In 1973 the U.S. Supreme Court held in Roe V.Wade that the right of privacy protects women’s decisions to end unwanted pregnancy before the fetus develops.” By 2013, 70 restrictions to curb the practice of abortion from 22 states. (Funk & Wagnalls pg.1). In 2014, five health votes were examined by the House of Representatives regarding the matter of abortion.
Abortion has long been an issue that has been debated surrounding medical ethics. With genetic testing leading to many parents choosing to terminate the pregnancy in the case of a ¨probable risk that a fetus carries a genetic disorder¨ (Rebouché and Rothenberg 988) it lends itself to believe that there is a direct connection between genetic testing and abortion. This is why genetic testing must be done only in necessary cases, to be able to protect the lives of unborn children that have
As a representative for humanism at the United Nations, Brown claims that abortion should remain legal because with the banning of abortions women will use unsafe ways to have the procedure. According to Brown, “Nearly half of those abortions (20 million) are medically unsafe, resulting in the deaths of nearly 80,000 women a year and a much larger number suffering infection, injury, and trauma,” (Brown). Brown believes that making abortion illegal will not put an end to abortions, which is an honest statement. In general, Brown believes that if the government spent more money in programs that taught sex education and the practice of safe sex, then the amount of abortions would decrease. Raymond J. Adamek, a professor at Kent State University, feels that abortion should not be legal.
Knowing the statistics of what Planned Parenthood does and how many women and men use these services is important because of the misconceptions are present and prevalent in the minds of many. For example, most believe that abortion is all that Planned Parenthood does and that it is the most popular. However, as shown in the graph, abortion takes of 3% of all of Planned Parenthood’s services. In fact, Planned Parenthood performs STI/STD testing and treatment the most, with the next program being contraception. When the funding in places like Texas is lost, people go straight to abortion, when in fact, these men and women will be losing so much more than most realize.
