ON September 19th, the House of Representatives voted to defund Planned Parenthood. Mike DeBonis for the Washington explains in House votes to defund Planned Parenthood, but will that help avert a shutdown? the events that occurred in the House. Two bills were passed, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act and Defund Planned Parenthood Act. The former addressing criminal penalties if a health staff member did not help a child produced from a failed abortion, the latter addressing a year of no funds going to the Planned Parenthood group. The bill was split on party lines with 248 votes in support of the Survivor Act and 241 votes to defund Planned Parenthood. This is important because if we look into how many women are involved in
Planned Parenthood is considered a public interest group, which are citizen activist groups that try to represent what they deem to be the interest of the public at large. The most recent controversy in the news today is the proposal by the Republican Party to defund Planned Parenthood for one year, which is expected to fail, which could shut down the government. President Obama and Senate Democrats are willing to shut down the federal government to ensure that tax dollars keep flowing to the Planned Parenthood organization, one of their biggest political allies and financial contributor of millions of dollars to the Democratic Presidential campaign and Party. On Wednesday September 30th the House of Representatives passed a temporary spending bill. President Obama has signed that bill to avoid a government shutdown over the issue of defunding Planned Parenthood to cut spending. Planned Parenthood is the nations largest abortion provider, which is the reason why Republicans want to defund it, along with a recent video leak by anti- abortionist republicans of officials apart of Planned Parenthood discussing the illegal sale of fetal tissue. The video was said to be edited and the group denied any illegal activity. Planned Parenthood receives about twelve percent of its $528.4 million dollars from the government through grants and reimbursements from a law called Title X. Title X gives money to not only Planned Parenthood but also hospitals, schools, health departments, and other non- profits. About the other seventy- five percent of its money comes from patients they are serving insured by Medicaid. A government shutdown would mean that thousands of people working in the government would furlough if Congress did not make this decision.
Planned Parenthood has remained a controversial topic in government and in households throughout America. There are split views on whether it should be funded by government or not, not to mention the underlying moral dilemma when it comes to abortions. In essence, Planned Parenthood was funded $500,000 in 2014. Though they are not prohibited to use federal funding on abortions, but Planned Parenthood conducts around 300,000 abortions a year using other funding. Recently, an anti-abortion group conducted an undercover interview and discovered that Planned Parenthood uses fetal tissue for scientific research, which is against the law. However, if patients who get an abortion choose to donate the tissue for research, this is legal. Since the breaking
GOP lawmakers are trying to shut down Planned Parenthood clinics across the country, on the basis that all they do is provide abortions. On the contrary, only three percent of Planned Parenthood services are abortions. They provide a variety of services for both men and women , including general health care and sex health. Some general health care includes cholesterol, high blood pressure, and anemia screening, cancer testing, vaccines, and physical exams. They try to make it as accessible and as affordable as they can, and accept most health care insurance, so that even low income men and women are able to get sufficient healthcare. Planned Parenthood also offers many different sexual and reproductive health services for both men and women. For women, they offer birth control, the contraceptive pill, STD testing, pregnancy care, and abortions when needed. They also offer screenings for breast, cervical, and ovarian cancer. Contrary to popular belief, they also offer sexual health services for men, including condoms, vasectomies, colon, prostate, and testicular cancer screenings, erectile dysfunction treatment, and STD screenings. Many people believe that Planned Parenthood is only for women getting abortions. On the other hand, Planned Parenthood offers many services for both men and women that are essential to their health and well being at a low cost. Without Planned Parenthood, many men and women
In an article written by Danielle Paquette, a writer for The Washington Post, she wrote in her Washington Post article, that, “The CBO, congressional budget office, a nonpartisan watchdog, estimates defunding Planned Parenthood, which serves roughly 2.6 million women, would lead to more unplanned births as patients lost access to birth control. Medicaid would cover some of those births, the report asserts, and some of those children would qualify for Medicaid and other welfare programs” (What Happens if Congress Ends Funding). So, even if this is an estimation would you want to risk
A majority of these lower income areas is in Republican states, so that leads to confusion as to why this political party would want to defund such organizations when the people they represent need them. The Republican party’s attempts to derail Planned Parenthood has already had vast negative impacts upon the people in those states. Places like Florida and Texas, which have already cut down on the number of Planned Parenthood facilities, have some of the highest STD rates, the highest teen pregnancy rates, and lowest equality rates among women. And the lack of Planned Parenthood and restrictive laws to prevent similar organizations from popping up might be a direct reason why. Planned Parenthood is an organization that offers affordable assistance
Planned Parenthood was established in 1916 when Margaret, her sister, and a friend opened the first birth control clinic in America. Located in Brooklyn, New York, the clinic began by facing many obstacles. Women at that time had virtually no rights; they could not vote, sign contracts, have bank accounts, or divorce abusive husbands. Also, in the beginning, the idea of contraception and family planning was considered “obscene.”
One of the biggest issues they combat is the stigma around abortions and birth control. Planned Parenthood Action strives to educate the public on the importance of giving women family planning information and resources. Providing access to sexual healthcare for the underprivileged is another big issue. For example, undocumented immigrants face many hurdles when trying to receive health care. Planned Parenthood aims to change policies that unfairly hurts people's’ health. Also, Planned Parenthood promotes comprehensive sex education in schools. Comprehensive sex ed. is the teaching of evidence-based sexual education that provides all information on sexual health.
In 2005, Susan G. Komen partnered with Planned Parenthood to begin funding for breast cancer screenings and health services. Komen provided roughly $580,000 in grants in 2010 and $680,000 in 2011 to the non-profit (Crisco, 2013). In 2011, Komen sought to end its funding to Planned Parenthood and was met with outcry by the public, and was faced with a public relations crisis.
Life does not always follows a person’s agenda, and Planned Parenthood knows that, which is the main reason it performs abortions. In 2005, a website named Guttmatcher Institute collected data concerning the women who request abortions from approximately 38 different

To begin, Planned Parenthood would argue that individuals who choose to take part in their services, do so to better their life. It may be utilizing their birth control services, getting an abortion, or acquiring simple reproductive health care, but the person receiving the resources ultimately decides what is best for their body and life. Throughout the organization's website and tabs of information
The Planned Parenthood website provides a lot of useful information for users that had an unplanned pregnancy or any type of regular pregnancy. It is a good website that can help you make different decision regarding of pregnancy, general health care, relationship, abortion, etc. Personally, I do not agree or believe that abortion should be allowed because it is the easy way out for irresponsible sex. Of course, there are different circumstances that having an abortion will be the mother only option, but other than that it should be allowed. I should state first that I am Christian, and I strongly believe that aborting a baby is the same thing as killing a person. Many people would think differently than me, and that is fine because we are
I believe in women 's rights and the right of a woman to control her own body. We can win this election if we make it known that women shouldn 't have to fight for their bodies. We will protect the reproductive rights of women. We will keep the choice of abortion between the woman and her doctor. We cannot defund Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood helps men and women with general health needs. Planned parenthood provides free breast exams, prevention of unintended pregnancies, tests for STD 's, abortion services, and is the largest provider for sex education. In Vermont there are growing frustrations that members of congress, mostly
