Some say Christopher Columbus was a hero because he was the explorer that discovered America. In reality, Christopher Columbus had an incredibly negative impact on the world because he enslaved the Native Americans, didn’t help the kind Natives when they got infected by diseases that the Spaniards had brought to America, and killed off most of the Native American population. The tactics he chose to use were violent and destructive by the standards back then and now. First, Columbus treated the Native Americans like uncivilized people by enslaving them and forcing them to work for him although they greeted him and his crew peacefully. ” They could make fine servants,”(document 2) he wrote in his journal,”I took them by force.
The nineteenth century for Latin America became plagued with repeated violence due to acts of rebellion in attempts for the folk to regain autonomy over their own lives. After gaining independence from the Spanish crown the folk wanted to keep their culture and tribal lands, much as the Spanish had allowed them to. However, the Creole elites planned to force the folk into living to commodity-based existences. With the confiscation of indigenous land large quantities of the folk were forced to move into the cities in search of jobs, despite the Europeanization, folk culture prevailed in the
“Custer's Last Stand” was a victory for the Indian people, but as a result of their win, they brought a lot of attention to themselves which angered the American people. As a result, the US government treated the Native Americans more hostile, allowing John Gibbons to go and attack the Nez Perce Indians, didn’t follow through with their agreements dealing with land and took land away, and kept expanding westward while continuing to grow America East to West. Directly after new got out that the Indians had not only won the battle, but had slaughtered the American army, John Gibbons rounded up every available man and went after the Nez Perce Indians, whom he thought were the easiest and head of attack. Many innocent woman and children died on
By winning independence from Spain, many creoles thought that they could achieve power over Latin America. The Peninsulares who were all-Spanish were hated by the Creoles. The Peninsulares “monopolized all administrative positions(Doc B)”, making it impossible for the Creoles to rule the country that they were born in. The Creoles felt that they were the best fit for
The Age of Exploration was a time of great expansion in the European Countries. From Africa, to North and South America, the Spanish, Dutch, English and French were all competing to find new trade routes, new commodities, and new areas to convert to their religion. The Age of Exploration had a tremendous impact on Europe, the Americas, and Africa. On one hand, Europe was able to expand widely across the world spreading their culture. On the other hand, the Americas were discovered and had their original culture changed immensely.
From this letter you can see Tourgees clear use of the word “another” meaning that other Republican men were targeted and killed by the KKK all because they fought to have the South follow the same rules as the North. It was as though the KKK felt personally battered so they enjoyed doing to same to men that caused such emotions. Politics within the white community was not the only issue. As mentioned before African Americans did not get the political freedom that was actually granted to them not only because of their race and low standing but they were “ ‘unfitted for the proper exercise of political duties… blacks needed a period of probation and instruction’ “ (Document D).
In 1763, Britain took some of Spain’s land despite having just helped them. King Louis XV tried to give his land away to his cousin because he thought that the land wasn’t rich enough. Many Native Americans such as the Sioux lived in the region. King Louis gladly gave the land to Spain because of how expensive it was. The British wanted to defeat Spain so badly that they had the Native Americans attack them.
Therefore, according to Morgan and Cody (as well as other contemporaries sharing similar viewpoints), as Americans gradually permeated Native American territories and established towns and cities, these Native American communities—supposedly made up of primitive barbarians—would fail to come to terms with American efforts to “civilize” Native Americans, thus resulting in warfare between the U.S. and these Indian tribes, and eventually leading to the total genocide of the Indian population (2). However, although warfare did erupt between the two groups—which resulted in the extermination of the majority of Native Americans—theories of total extinction of the Native Americans were inaccurate for two dominant reasons: one, a small but significant group of tribes remained after the intrusion of White settlers, and two, Indians tribes were not made up of simpleminded brutes, but intelligent peoples who were, initially, willing to negotiate with U.S. envoys before war erupted. Both of these facts disproved the claim that Native American stubbornness to adapt to American civilization would be the only cause of their demise—instead, it was the U.S.’ fault
Colonization is a process of bigger/stronger countries dominating and inhabiting other smaller/weaker countries/islands for their benefits in various ways which lead to the benefit of their own country. Then that creates colonies in different parts of the world and that basically means they have their own country in another country, and when they have different colonies in different parts of the world that means they can trade with a bigger amount of countries/islands. Colonization started in the 15th century, and it started because of the portuguese and the spanish exploring the americas by accident because they were searching a closer and faster route to India. Colonization then became popular and then more countries wanted to find faster, better and closer trade routes so that they can acquire different and good resources from different countries. Why did Britain colonize
The Age of Exploration occurred from 1400 to 1700 C.E. It is famously known as the Age of Exploration because it was a time when explorers from Europe travelled by sea to explore west of them, and make many geographical advances. Exploration was motivated by gold, glory, and God. Along with their motivation, the Europeans also wanted to find trading partners, new goods, new trade routes, and simply find new land. With exploration, there were many good effects and many bad ones.
In the book it mentions that the Maya knew not to go against the Spanish Masters because their military was much stronger than the Mayan warriors. There were very much loss with the Mayan Empire because of the conquest itself. Moreover the Mayans were captured as slaves and sold by the Spaniards for trade and economic purposes. As the Mayan Empire fell there were other tribal groups that would want to seek alliance with the Spaniards.
Lord Jeffrey Amherst, gave blankets as gifts to the Natives without their knowing of the disease that was waiting to attack their unprepared immune system. Vice Versa While the Americas suffered a great loss due to disease transferred by the Europeans, Europe was introduced to Syphilis (S.T.D.). I find this a tad ironic due to the fact that Europeans infected the Native Americans, then the Native Americans then affected the Europeans through the women they stole. “The Pox” as Europeans called syphilis, spread through Europe slowly then about as fast as the diseases in the New World did. When sores would occur on the genital area mercury and guaiacum were used as a remedy.
Native American captives could easily escape into the familiar wilderness where the Europeans had not yet explored and return to their original tribe. However, the number of Native Americans was small compared to that of the African
For a native american, life in the colonies would probably be scary at first. New people you have never seen before are coming bringing diseases and taking your land. The diseases killed countless numbers of Native Americans because they weren’t immune to them. Other than the diseases, and their land being taken, some tribes were very helpful to the colonists. They would teach them things, and also be a good trading partner with them.
Native Americans were the first American citizens, but ever since explorers discovered America they have had a prejudice towards them. Throughout the years the Natives have endured racism, the Trail of Tears, being stuck on a reservation, and ultimately being marginalized. Native’s who live on reservations feel discriminated against and mistreated which makes life on one rough. The sadness and general melancholy on a reservation leads Native Americans to have severe drug and alcohol problems.
