During the 1920s, the United States was leading the world in economic growth. However, during Herbert Hoover Presidency the United States experienced the largest and longest economic crisis in history, which was referred to as the Great Depression. There were many explanations and arguments to what caused the Great Depression to take place. Some economists argued that the fall back of the agricultural sector contributed to the Great Depression. Some blamed the decrease in taxes and absent of government regulations, which supported the belief that markets were self-regulating.
As a result of this massive population increase, new homes were built to accommodate the influx of people. Approximately 40% of the housing in Crofton has been built since 1990, and there has been a massive sprawl in the areas where neighborhoods have been built (“Best Places: Crofton,
Sandra Cisneros in the novel The House on Mango Street writes about culture, racism, languages, names, poverty, discrimination, friends and family to convey that racism causes insecurities in cultures. Esperanza is a dreamer, independent and occasionally unmindful. Cisneros shows that Esperanza is a dreamer when she describes the house Esperanza imagines what her new house would look like. Because Esperanza said “Our house would be white with trees around it, a great big yard and grass growing without a fence” [Cisneros 4] readers can infer that Esperanza is a dreamer. By using a metaphor, Cisneros shows that Esperanza is independent. When Esperanza, opinionated and insecure, said “Nenny is too young to be my friend…
The railroad provided a growth in economy in the cities it was laid through. Such things as restaurants, hotels, lumber jobs, mining, and stores usually followed due to the increase in population. Sometimes the growth of a city was temporary and only last as long as the railroad workers were in the area. Then when the laying of the railroad moved, the growth would subside and return to its preboom population and commerce (Olsen et al. 157). However, cities such as Omaha, Nebraska and Denver, Colorado are examples of the railroad’s longer lasting effects on the growth of a city.
Sengupta explains that Boyle’s film solely portrays the negative aspects of capitalism in Mumbai as well as the harsh reality that it’s citizens experience and live in. Sengupta conveys accurate points when describing life in the slums based on what we witness in Danny Boyle’s movie, Slumdog Millionaire. When talking about the slums and the streets of Mumbai, Sengupta is precise when explaining that the city is cluttered with waste and rubbish. In Slumdog Millionaire, there is a scene where Jamal, Salim, and the other children of Mumbai are running from police officers in which Boyle uses different camera angles to show different parts of the city. In this scene, all of the shots expose trash laying in the background behind the slums and in the rivers surrounding Mumbai.
The House on Mango Street consists of many short stories that explain the life of a young girl named Esperanza. It also explains her living situation; poverty in a crime riddance neighborhood. In addition, she also states the various obstacles that she has to overcome in her everyday life, such as wearing cheap clothes, eating the lunches her mom makes, living in her home, etc. Reading the book once without looking at it through an analytical perspective the book may seem two-dimensional and flat. While Cisneros’ stories may be short, after re-reading it to get a deeper understanding as to what she really means, the significance of the text becomes even more visible, and the interpretations become increasingly powerful.
Maintain status quo. According to a survey of mayors, most of them expressed desire for higher housing values. For them, the ideal neighborhood is “older areas that have maintained housing values.” In light with economic imperatives and logic, mayors need to prioritize economic growth.
But they strictly wanted the property to remain a residential property with minimum to no commercial use. Since this was not going anywhere we decided to talk about our other concerns. Price also seemed to be a big point of conflict between us. The seller expected to receive twenty million dollars, more than their alternative offer of nineteen million dollars from Quincy Market. I knew my reservation price was twenty million dollars hence I did not proceed further.
Esperanza’s house on Mango Street is not the house she dreamed on when she lived on Loomis Street, not the kind of house her parent’s talked about, not the house she wanted. Her house on Mango Street is a small, red house with even smaller stairs leading to the door. The brick are falling out of place and to get inside, one must shove the door, swollen like Esperanza’s feet in later vignettes, open. Once inside, where you are never very far from someone else, there are small hallway stairs that lead to the only one shared bedroom and bathroom. This house is just, “For the time being,”[5] Esperanza claims, for this is nothing like the house she longs for.
In order to raise awareness of the staggering injustices, oppression and mass poverty that plague many Indian informal settlements (referred to as slum), Katherine Boo’s novel, Behind the Beautiful Forevers, unveils stories of typical life in a Mumbai slum. There are discussions on topics surrounding gender relations, environmental issues, corruption, religion, and class hierarchies, as well as demonstrating India’s level of socioeconomic development. Encompassing this, the following paper will argue that Boo’s novel successfully depicts the mass social inequality within India. With Indian cities amongst the fastest growing economies in South East Asia, it is difficult to see evidence of this in the individual well-being of the vast majority of the nation. With high unemployment rates, the expansion of informal settlements and the neglect of basic human rights, one of India’s megacities, Mumbai, is a good representation of these social divisions.

In this positive-sum environment, competitors do not erode profits as they work together to increase the value of their land.
