In Columbia, Locura is also known as “ataques de locura” madness attacks, it is attributed to a spell known as “maleficio”. Locura is commonly associated with other culture bound syndromes thru out Central and South America, such as ataques de nervious (nervios) and possession syndromes (Piñeros 1998:1425).
Medicine became the new normal in the 1800`s which produced new people who invented things, new ideas , new outlets of inventions and a discovery of new medicine which benefits us to this day . Many of the scientist I mentioned played a role in all these changes.Which today we need to learn to appreciate.I believe if some of these things didn 't happen we wouldn 't be as healthy and appreciative.Also I don 't believe doctors would know what they were doing to cure people.The different medicines in society to this day were because of many years ago.Furthermore we don 't even recognize the value of these scientist.
Aging: Treating Asian Indian American elders can be very difficult. For example, many elders consider the old-style Indian system of medicine called "Ayurvedic Medicine" means preventing and curing illness. This system suggests herbal supplements to cure and prevent illnesses. Elder patients from India don't prefer taking medicines that are prescribed by their doctors.

A lot of surveys have been done over the years about the ethological aspect of these practices since they are sometimes considered holistic and unfounded since many healing practices are composed of rituals and sacred bundles used by shamans or witches. To a foreign audience, it might be at first disorienting and doubtful because medicine in our world is considered a science and revolves around collected data unlike religious practices. A survey made in 1994 states that “Many respondents indicated that they were unsure what traditional Native medicine entailed and thus had difficulty forming an opinion on whether it would be appropriate in various settings, especially in the hospital. In fact, 16% of the physicians indicated this directly, and another 14% left the question blank, when asked for their definition of traditional Native medicine (Table 2). Eighty-one percent believed that the use of traditional Native medicine was not an important issue in their community, although 41% knew of at least one patient in their practice using such medicines, and 15% knew of more than five patients using them. Eighty-one percent of respondents indicated that they would be interested in learning more about traditional Native healing.” (Zubek 1925). Of course, one might argue that this survey was made in 1994 and that our culture and the scientific world is
Today’s society consist of a variety of different cultures. Each cultures has their own identity, customs, and beliefs. In my community we have several strong, family oriented cultures. The two that were chosen was the Hispanics community and the Haliwa-Saponi Native American community. It was very interesting to see that while this communities are different they share some strong similarities, such as family ties.
The medical field in relation to varied cultural beliefs and traditions is something that is important to many, yet rarely talked about by almost all individuals. In other words, the cultural clashes created in medicalization is under looked by a multitude individuals. This is because many do not experience the hardships first hand. For that reason, the thought of difficulties within treatments of health issues or illnesses does not cross some individual’s minds. Nonetheless, each group of people is unique, in addition to, how they perceive the medical world. With this uniqueness comes many groups of people who struggle to understand other culture’s beliefs and their knowledge on health and illness. The lack of knowledge an individual has pertaining
Complementary therapies are treatments that make up a range of services provided by the NHS. Treatments that are available are acupuncture, aromatherapy, art therapy, chiropractic, herbal medicine and homeopathy. These treatments are offered to patients who may have cancer or other illnesses. These treatments are also used to help maintain one’s health, improving the immune system, sleeping patterns, increasing energy levels and help to depose of toxins. Complementary therapies are not clinically tested but have been used for many years and also most therapists are self employed.
Alternative health approaches to health care are analysed using a broad range of of research to get various concepts and understanding of the CAM therapies. In 1986 Aakster did a research on how CAM therapies varied fro the traditional biomedical treatments. In his conclusion he found three models that suited medical perspective as listed below;
Did you know that at least 30% of prescription drugs in the United States are based on naturally occurring compounds from plants? Each year, millions of dollars are spent searching for new, undiscovered, curative elements in the bark, roots, flowers, seeds and foliage of plants from every corner of the Earth.
Traditional healers are individuals that are a part of the community and it is less expensive. Money is not the only factor that deters people away from seeking out western medicine, culture is the other. Traditions of the family are respected and a combo of western and traditional medicine are used (Smith, 2000). Of the Mexican immigrant culture, a little more than half of the population self-treat their symptoms and conditions while the other forty-nine percent seek folk healer or western health care professionals (Smith, 2000). Although it is in culture to use folk healers, many do not tell their health professionals about their traditional healer (Smith, 2000). Health professionals may not agree with the methods and treatments of the healers
Native American author, Mourning Dove, stated, “What kept us going, was the knowledge that everything on earth has its purpose, every disease an herb to cure it, and every person a mission. That is the Indian theory of existence." (Mourning, 1990, p. 69) Histories that deal with health, illness, and medicine in America, often make passing mention of Native Americans as healers or sources of knowledge about medicine. Similarly, histories of Native-American cultures and early European contact pay attention only to health and healing with respect to these cross-cultural interactions. Many books and articles have been written on Native American medicine. However, there have been virtually no scientific studies done on tribal healing practices, undoubtedly due to the spiritual nature of the treatments. Some of these historical pieces of literature attempt to assess the impact of Native-American knowledge of New World herbs on the knowledge and practice of early-American elite physicians and botanists. Healing and medical practices of Native Americans has been obscured by time but there is anecdotal evidence available and competing perspectives about the true values of Native American healing practices
Today, the medical world recognizes two tips of medicine, the conventional medicine known as Western and the Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). Although, they are by logic completely opposites in practice the have some similarities. The first one, is accepted in most of the advance countries. Though, the second one is having a lot of attention not just from de common people but from the biomedical system as part of their usual treatments. That is why the differences and similarities between Chiropractic as part of the CAM world and the Biomedical Model are getting smaller and closer together.
The University of Maryland Medical Center states that Herbal Therapy also called botanical medicine or phytomedicine, refers to using plant’s, seeds, berries, leaves, barks, or flowers for medicinal purposes. Herbalism has a long tradition of use outside conventional medicine. It is becoming more mainstream as improvements in analysis and quality control, along with advances in clinical research, show the value of herbal medicine in treating and preventing diseases. Herbal medicine is a natural, non-toxic way to treat many conditions of ill-health. It is holistic, meaning it treats the whole person, embracing all levels of an individual: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Herbal medicines are widely preferred by some individuals all
