March: Book Three, written by Andrew Aydin, John Lewis, is a graphic novel that illustrates the internal and external struggles of civil rights leaders such as, Martin Luther King Jr., and John Lewis. This graphic novel is loaded with rhetoric that helps elucidate the dedicated efforts of civil rights activists. One example of rhetoric that is prominent within the graphic novel is the use of pathos. The appeal of emotion exemplifies the weight that one had to bear in order to support the civil rights movement. Despite all of the weight, the march still continued. Winston works for “The Ministry of Truth” in which they rewrite history, but they had a significant slogan. The slogan that they had was “ War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength”. After reading this, the reader could tell that they are using irony to run their society. War is Peace, means that in their society, keeping the people believe that constant war is actually a way of maintaining peace, and if there is constant war, then the people of this society are constantly giving, sacrificing, and pledging devotion to their government, which ends up giving the government more power. Activity theory, as interpreted by Ph.D. candidates, Wardle and Kain, is a process that attempts to see all aspects of activity such as social interactions and use of writing and language to achieve goals. This theory is award winning. Activity theory states that for a system to be effective, the rules, community, subject, division of labor, and motives must be reasonable. These components are shown through the chosen tool of communication most often. When one area of the system is corrupted, the tool will no longer function correctly in order to communicate or achieve its goals.
Writing a rhetorical analysis on a specific text is something that I have never had to do before in prior classes, so when I found out that I had to write an entire paper on a rhetorical analysis on a text of my choosing I was a little worried. Some would argue that the content is for children who are too lazy to read a novel full of text. March Book One and Two, are Two of Three of the trilogy written by John Lewis and Andrew Aydin, while illustrated by Nate Powell. The Trilogy is about John Lewis life and the Civil rights movement that occurred between the years 1954 and 1968. The Civil Right movement consisted of African-Americans fighting for equal rights.

The novel is a direct description of John Lewis’ life and the struggles he faced fighting for civil and human rights. The book includes many details and visual pictures, that explain Lewis’ story and its effect on black history. So the novel is to inform others about the story of Mr. Lewis and how his accomplishments were mainly a result of the Civil Rights Movement.
March is a book by John Lewis about the Civil Rights Movement and all the events that happened during it. The book talks about the harsh treatment of African-Americans at the time and all the hardships they faced back then. John Lewis showed his perseverance through his speech, action, and thoughts. In the beginning of the book, John Lewis stands with other civil rights activists during the Selma to Montgomery Marches.
As seen throughout significant events in history, strong leaders are able to mold language into a powerful tool, which they utilize for specific goals. In Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail and Henry David Thoreau’s On the Duty of Civil Disobedience, many rhetorical devices such as ethos and the difference between just and unjust laws play a direct role in exemplifying main ideas throughout the essays. Although the essays were very similar, they did differ in the tone and audience they attracted. King and Thoreau are able to solidify their main ideas by establishing ethos in both essays.

In Niccolo Machiavelli's book, The Prince (1513), he evaluates on how a prince can be a successful leader. Machiavelli’s purpose of this guidebook was to construct his argument to the rising ruler Giuliano de Medici for when he comes to power in Florence. He adopts a casual but authoritative tone in order to convince the prince that Machiavelli’s evaluation on how to be the best prince, is the right thing for the prince to do without coming off as he knows more than the prince or is trying to intimidate him.. Machiavelli’s reference to previous rulers and whether their tactics failed or succeeded helps to benefit his credibility along with his allusion to historic text. He appeals to our logic by simply stating a prince can only do what is within his power to control, and his use of an analogy furthers his argument.
Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
The comic book “March Book One & Two,” illustrates the difficulties that the African American community had to face during the Civil Rights Movement. The “Excerpts from Understanding Comics,” article is able to show readers what comic books represent and the way in which both the author and artist portray the story on one page and then throughout the story. It helps readers understand “March: Book One & Two,” because the reader will be able to understand the book and the meaning that they are trying to get across to others. Book one is more about the actual actions that were being taking for the civil rights movement, while book two was about the ideas of the civil rights movement and how the leaders of each organization in the movement needed to watch everything that they were doing. This happens because John Lewis moves into different types of leadership roles between both books.
Near the beginning of his renowned essay, "Civil Disobedience," Henry David Thoreau appeals to his fellow citizens when he says, "...I ask for, not at once no government, but at once a better government. " This request serves as a starting point from which the rest of "Civil Disobedience" emerges. Thoreau 's essay is particularly compelling because of its incorporation of rhetorical strategies, including the use of logos, ethos, pathos, purposive discourse, rhetorical competence and identification. I will demonstrate how each of these rhetorical techniques benefit Thoreau 's persuasive argument. Thoreau uses logos throughout his essay to strengthen his argument with reasoning.
Award winning writer, George Orwell, in his dystopian novel, 1984, Winston and O’Brien debate the nature of reality. Winston and O’Brien’s purpose is to persuade each other to believe their own beliefs of truth and reality. They adopt an aggressive tone in order to convey their beliefs about what is real is true. In George Orwell’s 1984, Winston and O’Brien use a variety of different rhetorical strategies and appeals such as parallel structure, pathos, and logos in order to persuade each other about the validity of memories and doublethink; however, each character’s argument contains flaw in logic. Winston debates with O’Brien that truth and reality are individual and connected to our memories.
March Rhetorical Analysis The 1960’s civil rights movement often used persuasive language to echo the unheard voices of many individuals. Some more than others possessed the ability to exercise their potent use of language to bring forward prominent changes. In the book, March by John Lewis and Andrew Aydin, eloquent methods of speech play an important role. John Lewis, Martin Luther King, and George Wallace are some that expressed their beliefs through persuasive empowering words.
Whenever I hear the word politics, I think of the generalization of the word. I do not just think about the presidential elections because it is just a small part of it. Politics means citizens argue or converse about issues, such as abortion, gun control and illegal aliens. It also is for individuals to dispute over the concerns of citizens in order to gain power. Politics also means the activities of the government such as law making.
