To start, Dr. King’s use of metaphors allows his audience to understand his viewpoint better. Since the founding of the Americas in the late 1400s, slavery was a problem; until the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862. Then the segregation of African Americans and White Americans started. In his essay, Dr. King uses the metaphor “America has given the Negro people a bad check, which came back marked “insufficient funds” (46). King uses this metaphor to emphasize the treatment of African Americans in America.
Dr. King felt passionate about his belief that America's involvement in the Vietnam war was unjust, and decided to write a essay on the topic. Dr. King used many persuasive elements to better his chances of affecting the reader. For example, he uses factual information to push points, reasoning to back up said facts, and emotional appeal to speak to the reader on a personal level. Dr. King makes specific points on the unjust use of the poor during the war and the persistent issue of social inequality still plaguing America. Using these methods Dr. King is able to better persuade the reader on the issue at hand.
The most effective rhetorical device, I think, used by Martin Luther King is, ethos and pathos because he used the colored people's belief to get them to support him in his journey and he used their emotions to compare it to the whiteś emotion. First, Martin uses ethos,¨Like paul, i must constantly respond to the macedonian call for aid.¨ (SB Page 207) This means, in martinś speech he wisely used the belief of his people (God) to inspirate them. This is a clear example of ethos. Next Martin uses Pathos ¨We know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor.”
Martin Luther King has changed America tremendously, wouldn’t you agree? King has made very powerful writings but the two main speeches are “I Have a Dream” and “Letter From Birmingham Jail”. There is many of the three rhetorical appeals which are Pathos, Logos, and Ethos. There was one simple thing in both species, King wanted freedom but unfortunately he did not get that. He tried really hard because segregation got way out of control.

Although, the act of revenge is not the solution to our problems, we still desire to inflict torment on each and every individual that we feel deserves it. However, this is not the only problem that we face today, America is a multicultural place where people believe in different practices and become prejudice to the diverse religions. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. uses more powerful and plentiful examples of pathos in his literature, examples of which being his “I Have a Dream” speech and his “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, than logos due to the more powerful emotional connection they carry which can convince his listeners to sympathize with his civil rights movement.

In the “ Letter to Martin Luther King from a Group of Clergymen” Martin Luther King Jr. used rhetorical techniques such as logos and asking rhetorical questions to show his audience the value of civil disobedience. On page 7 Martin Luther King says “ Since we so diligently urge people to obey the supreme courts decision of 1954 outlawing segregation in the public schools it is rather strange and perodoxical to find us consciously breaking laws.” This is persuasive because it’s a fact, the truth. We break laws on a daily basis, minor ones, and know it but yet obeying the courts decision about segregation doesn’t phase us. This is giving a logic statement about obeying the courts decision.
