General Robert Edward Lee served as a military officer in the U.S. Army, was a West Point commandant and was the legendary general of the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. Robert E. Lee was born on January 19, 1807 in Stratford Hall, Virginia. Lee. He grew up in Northern Virginia with his mother and eight other siblings.
