Roland Reagan came into the office during his first term hoping to use his administration to fight communism and end the Cold War. He finds out it was not easy as he thought. So, in his second term he turned to a different strategy getting to know someone like Gorbachev. The conservatives thought he was making a mistake. Roland Reagan’s success finally proved to the conservatives that his friendship with Gorbachev was not a dupe. Gorbachev was not deceitful, but a reformer who wanted to reform, change for Russia and end the Cold War. This was beneficial to ending the Cold War because the Soviets could not afford to move resources, Nuclear Missiles, into firing positions.

African Americans had gained rights under the new amendments made to end slavery, gain equal voting right, and due process. Previously, the economy was still recovering from the great depression and resources used in the Vietnam War. The Vietnam war brought the fight against communism into perspective because we needed to find new battle tactics to fight against Vietnam. Previously, the US hadn’t sent in troops a majority of the time to try to help the containment of communism. Ronald Reagan was elected twice into office on January 20, 1981 and January 20, 1984. For his first term he had a popular vote result of 51% and 489 electoral votes.

He was the one president that accomplished in 8 years what took multiple presidents to do. He is the man that ended the Cold War, and made America the better place it is now.
