Kathryn Stockett, the author of The Help uses imagery to help the reader better comprehend the meaning of the passage. As the reader reads along in the passage reading about little Miss Skeeter, “Munching on peanuts, sorting through the pieces spread out on the table, a storm [raging] outside (Stockett 77). Through this imagery that the author provides the reader is instantly transformed into the world of little Miss Skeeter as she is sitting down by Constantine on a dark stormy night doing a puzzle. The reader can hear the crunch of the peanuts and smell the rain coming from outside as they read the passage. Stockett also uses diction to contribute to the imagery of the passage.
In the article “The welcome German open their homes to refugees” by Naina Bajekal, She uses a lot of pathos as well as ethos and logos to convey the struggles of the refugees. Bajekal uses logos by saying, “Germany-Having recorded 200,000 migrant arrival in all of 2014- opened its door to more than 270,000 asylum seekers in september alone” (Bajekal 87). Bajekal used the logos in this quote to show that the Germans were sympathetic to the immigrants and let them into their country. She also uses ethos in order to refute the argument that the response was not welcoming. She said “Conservative parts of the country have been less welcoming, with protest against migrants.
This passage intrigues me because it explains a little how a body is prepared for a funeral. As a student looking into the health community, this intrigues me because of how it is seen as similarity to surgery. “His equipment, consisting of scalpels, scissors, augers, forceps, clamps, needles, pumps, tubes, bowls and basins (...)” (2) The informative tone that Mitford possesses for this essay sounds like what a college professor would lecture, it can get a bit boring (but then again, that could be because of my generation 's attention span and my attention span) but overall informing and she makes it seem as though you need notes on these (then again, most informative writings seem that way). She also uses descriptive language to hook the readers with colorful words (not bad words, just descriptive) and her use of them boosts the readings likeability, in my opinion.
Since entering office, President Donald Trump has taken a hostile stance towards Iran, and now threatens to end the era of rapprochement that prevailed during the Obama Administration. This would be a significant mistake that would bode ill for both the United States and Iran. While detractors of President Obama’s policy towards Iran argue that it strengthens the oppressive regime of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, the opposite is actually true. The newsletter 'Getting our future back on the rails – slowly', published by the leader of the Grow Slow Garden Group, asserts the need and beneficial factors of transforming the abandoned railway yards that is a "shockingly neglected wasteland" into a "fresh, natural land". In a firm and eloquent tone, the writer conveys that they are not a "radical group of environmentalists" but just a group who is "proud to be contributing to a greener Australia". The emphasis on this positions the readers to believe that anybody can promote to a greener and better Australia. Throughout the newsletter the writer's main contention is clear.
1) I could not find a Thesis. Throughout the essay, he talks about how college-level writers can most times be boring and repetitive when it comes to their essays. 2) He says the first step is to write down the argument that comes to mind, but to not use it, because that’s probably what everyone else is going to write about. 3) He recommends avoiding obvious content, taking the less usual side and to always write everything as vigorously as possible.
My second project was the rhetorical analysis which weighted 45% of my grade. For my second project, I have to pick a reliable and unreliable source that relates to Kennedy’s assassination conspiracy theories. I have to make 3 separate papers for a reliable source, unreliable source, and comparison of two sources that would be presented in class. This project was a great learning experience because I get to learn and identify the differences between reliable and unreliable sources. From this project, I really struggled with finding the right unreliable source because it was harder to find on the search results.
While reading there are various ways to gain a deeper understanding of the text. For example, one method a reader can apply to increase their understanding is rhetorical reading defined as “involves more than ‘agreeing’ or ‘disagreeing’” (Heasley et al. 89). Thus, requiring the reader to focus on the text and pay close attention to the rhetorical situation to comprehend how an argument is working. In detail, the rhetorical situation consists of the writer, reader, text/purpose, and context.
During my years of being a scholar most of my writings have come mainly from research papers. My teachers would either assign a research topic or you could choose your own. Sometimes we even got readings or books that we would have to read and write a paper on. This past semester I took English 1001 and typed papers I had never learned to do before and I also learned how to do an annotated bibliography. These papers were papers like visual and rhetorical analysis.
Many share the misconception that racism is a problem of the past. To them, prejudice has entirely ceased to exist, and today, humanity bears witness to a nondiscriminatory world. The flippant citing of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream,” perhaps even validates this new, egalitarian society emerging; however, such a society is merely an illusion. In fact, a minor offense as simple as citing “I Have a Dream” may not seem a big deal; however, many anthropologists contend that the telltale signs of institutionalized racism are present in these seemingly innocent actions. Furthermore, scholars Elizabeth Barnert and Terry Jones examine the state of institutionalized racism in their respective articles.
Servant leadership can be applied from the top of an organization to the lowest member because no one team member is more important than another. This is because each member is dependent upon the other to accomplish their job. This form of leadership provides a positive example of leadership for both junior to highest ranking members of the senior personnel, because of a single team member regardless of rank being attentive,supportive, and helpful to those members of staff below and above them. I chose Servant Leadership for my discussion topic as it was my chosen style of leadership during my military career and the one I extend into my civilian career. I feel it is important to be a servant to your followers (staff) as they are the ones who truly carry out the tasks which accomplish the goals of your organization. Without truly understanding where your staff is mentally, sharing work and hardship with them and allowing them to see you have their best interests at heart; you will not have engaged followers (Farmer, 2010). To be an effective leader in today’s workplace, it is important to accomplish your organization’s goals on time and on budget. Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
They put the benefits of others above their own needs. In researching the history of “Servant Leadership” in was develop in 1970’s reflecting the idea that great leaders primary goals are to serve others. A good leader must aspire to lead through a need of servicing others versus trained to lead through external motivations. It further suggests that a person must have a specific set of values in order to be a successful leader. Servant Leader consists of ten characteristics listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people and building community.
Servant leadership believes one should provide priority to others interest. Leaders should server others to meet their desires, needs and aspiration. Leaders should service and develop their employees (Nahavandi, 2015) leaders do not encourage leaders to go over and beyond to meet the need of the individual problems. Servant leadership listens, persuades, and give empathy during times of crisis. Authentic leaders adapt their style to the situation.
