“The Wife of Bath’s Tale” begins with an unequivocal incident of sexual assault, yet how that assault and the question of consent are interpreted are complicated in light of Suzanne Edwards’ essay, “The Rhetoric of Rape.” Edwards’ essay provides a new historicist lens to provide a context in which the reader can perhaps reconcile the problematic nature of sexual assault that Chaucer inserts into the “loathly lady” narrative. The rhetoric employed by the law in regards to rape complicates Chaucer’s knight’s crime by creating an atmosphere of ambiguity that raises more questions than answers. The disconnect that occurs between the rapist and his victim seems quite abominable on the part of Chaucer and his narrator in that it is quickly forgiven
Krakauer supports his argument of unfair rape trials by revealing bias towards the perpetrator in the court case. He does so by providing testimony that demonstrate how the overall image of the perpetrator leads jurors to disregard opposing evidence. In turn, this makes it harder for the perpetrator to receive deserved punishment for his actions and preventing further events. Krakauer quotes psychologist David Lisak, “Predators...get away with it over and over... because most of us are in denial. We’re disinclined to believe that someone who’s an attentive student or a congenial athlete could also be a rapist” (121).
Article Presentation Kathleen Harris and Alison Crawford (2015) wrote article in relation to, Robin Camp, a federal Canadian court judge, who was adjudicating a sexual assault case involving a 19-year-old women in Calgary, AB in 2014. During the victim’s testimony, Judge Camp asked the 19-year-old women “why she could not just keep her knees together” and “why didn’t you just sink your bottom down into the basin so he couldn’t penetrate you” (Crawford & Harris, 2015). These statements spark issues with the public and our judicial system. Due to this statement, Judge Camp has received many complaints, as well as, under review for his behaviour from the council.
Chapter eight of my book talks about Sexual Assault. Rap, sexual abuse and assault happens more than we think and not just among women, however, men as well. The odds are that the person who abuses you is likely someone that you know. Many sexual abuse cases involving children is unreported as a result of being scared, ashamed, guilt or threatened, same goes for being raped or attempted rapes. There are several myths about rap in the manner that women provoke or wanted to be raped, cry rap to take revenge, women wanted it since they did not resist and many more.
The rape myths that R. v. Ewanchuk includes within its case is heavily linked to the social construction of males and females involved in sexual assault cases. The outcome of this case largely impacted the feminist movement in a strong way. This case changed the future of sexual assault cases within many ways. To begin with, consent must be determined from the complainants/victims mind opposed to his or her actions. Secondly, there are many forms of physical actions along with verbal ways of issuing to refuse consent.
In society and college campuses, sexual assault occurs quite frequently. According to an estimation one third of women experience a forced sexual experience at least once in their life and most of the time it occurs in colleges. Men have also been reported to be victim of sexual assaults mostly by other men. Most of the time the sexual assault is planned and perpetrated by a third person, who is known to the victim of incident. Drug and alcohol use play role in this issue and contribute to the problem as most of the time the victim and perpetrators are under the effect of alcohol or any other drug during the incident.
American sexual offender laws are one of the most polarized debates in the media, off late. Many opponents claim that the United States have the strictest sex offender laws in the whole world, which does no good to the community at large because the staggering number of sex offender registries screen the deadliest offenders. Statement of the Problem Alcohol-related sexual assaults happen frequently within a college campus. Although sexual assault on campus has become a growing concern for the public, many of these sexual assaults go unreported so it is hard to know how severe of a problem it really is. Even though the majority of these sexual assaults are committed by acquaintances known to the victim many will be disciplined lightly or not at all by the university board. It is important to understand that sexual assault does not just mean rape, but also any sexual contact that involved force upon a person without that person’s consent. Having to identify a suspect involved in an active rape crime and fleeing the scene would be challenging. It is many factors that come into play in this scenario. The number of people involved is your first determination. If more than two people are at the scene, you have to figure out if there are two suspects or two victims. How much time I had to view the crime and was it during the day or night to select the correct suspect.
