Should People Give Money to the Homeless? An article I read titled, Should you give the homeless money states, “The best way to help the homeless is a shelter, not a dollar.” There are millions of people in America living without food and shelter. There is no simple solution to homelessness but if you want to help the less fortunate you should not give money to the homeless directly you should give money to charities. Panhandling should not be allowed because many of the homeless people use it on drugs and alcohol. Another reason you should not give money to the homeless is that you do not know if they are faking it. Donating money to charities will impact homeless people long term. To start off, there are many charities and organizations in America that help people who are homeless. It is important to do research and make sure they are safe and the money really is going towards the homeless. Charities for the homeless help with finding jobs, permanent housing, shelter, counseling, food, and clothing. Giving twenty dollars to a homeless person will buy them food for a day but giving twenty dollars to a charity will help multiple people get food, clothing or shelter. Charities can also help people prepare for the real world, for example, they can volunteer in a soup kitchen and get experience for a resume. Homeless people don 't need money, they need help. Charities provide long-term benefits that make a difference and lead to a better life. Pope Francis said, “Give the money to the homeless people, don 't worry how they spend it.” He may believe this, however, it is stated in many articles that homeless people who are given money are known to use it incorrectly and spend it on drugs.
