The 1920s' in America was a decade full of contradictions, characterized by both optimism, youth, and prosperity, and a growing conservative trend, isolation, and intolerance. I will examine two of these contradictions and explore how they contributed to the development of America during the 1920's and further on. Overlooking the era's overall sense of optimism, driven by economic growth and a youthful spirit, the presence of conservative values and beliefs shaped the nation's approach and had lasting effects on society. Despite this, women were able to make a huge impact on America through social reforms. Many young women went against the beliefs of their parents. Prior to the Roaring Twenties, America was in a Victorian era. Women wore dresses that were floor-length, their hair was long and premarital sex was almost non-existent. During the 1920’s however, some women became what are known as “flappers”.

Many factors or events that helped shape the economy was the automobile, new consumer items, new freedoms, new morality, prohibition, the change of media, and the battle over evolution. With the influx of immigrants from 1919-1921, Congress established the Emergency Quota Act of 1921, which established the maximum people allowed to enter the United States from each foreign country. The Act targeted mainly Eastern and Southern Europeans as well as Asians. This demonstrates that America changed politically because Congress was now institutionalizing racism by taking measures, such as the Quota Act, to change the population of America.

A dichotomy of the 1920’s was the labor versus capital movement. Laborists, usually people who were a part of the working class, advocated for higher wages, less hours, and overall better working conditions. Capitalists, usually people who were employers and big business owners, wanted to keep their old business practices in place, such as cheap working conditions, low wages, and as many hours as needed. The Labor movement would be considered a progressive ideology while the capital movement the traditional ideology.
The 1920s were the first years of the new, modern America, with a growing consumer society and new ideas and rules. America saw many changes throughout this decade, including but not limited to social, economic and political changes. Throughout this time, new values were made with the growth of new forms of entertainment and education. After the Progressive Era, the ideas of political figures changed with a new focus on conservative politics and less labor issues. With the new ability for people to buy other products than basic needs, their money went to new inventions, causing new industries to grow.
