2. Socio-economic issues
According to the Oxford dictionary socio-economic is defined as: ‘relating to the interaction of social and economic factors.’ In order to critically analyse the evolution of Taste Holdings business strategy, socio-economic factors that are prevalent in a modern South Africa will be analysed, and they will be placed in the context of their chosen areas of operation. The dominant socio-economic issues with regards to Taste Holdings are: broad based black economic empowerment (B-BBEE), Taste Holdings acquisition of Domino’s and The Fish and Chip Co. and the executive director’s remuneration.
2.1 Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment
In a post-apartheid South Africa (1994 – present) the country is a democratic society aimed at providing equality to all its citizens, due to the restrictions on education, due to the Bantu education Act, and employment during the apartheid era a significant part of South Africa’s workforce is disadvantaged. This is a massive opportunity for Taste Holdings to expand their market share in the pizza industry as Domino’s pizza is one of the market leaders in the pizza industry in several countries (Share Data , 2014 (a)). Taste Holdings strategy is to convert existing Scooters and St. Elmo’s stores into Domino’s and their goal over the next five years is to establish Domino’s as the leading pizza delivery brand in South Africa (Share Data , 2014 (a)). On the nineteenth of May local aggrieved parties are objecting the validity of Taste’s acquisition of the master franchise rights for Domino’s as they feel they have already established an agreement with Domino’s to acquire the franchise rights (Share Data, 2014
Whilst the civil rights movement improved the life of African American’s in many ways, it was not until later that such minorities felt true improvement in their lives. Life during the 1950’s had only improved to a small extent, and despite more opportunities and higher wage earnings, there was only limited progress in solving the problems of segregation: violence continued, new employment opportunities and voting rights were not readily available and whilst there was change in the areas of transport and education, many important areas were still lacking. Many of the problems African American’s faced stemmed from the Jim Crow Laws enacted from 1876-1965, which were passed to separate blacks and whites in as many aspects of life as possible. This act was supposedly aimed at making separate but equal accommodations for both races but in reality these laws created segregated barriers and discrimination, where blacks were often treated as inferiors and put at a disadvantage ultimately making racism and prejudices systemic.
Although empowerment theory is intended to alleviate the oppression of marginalized groups, there are no specific guidelines or procedures for doing so (Gutierrez et al., 1995). As a result, this theory may prove to be too abstract for some practitioners, as there are no specific processes for implementing empowerment in an individual, group, or community and it is a more open-ended
Plato’s Diner is a family owned and operate business. The owners, Dean and Chris Papas are Greek immigrants and they believed if they worked hard and spend their money wisely they will become successful businessmen. Contrary to their beliefs the case highlights several issues at Plato’s Diner. These challenges derive from lack of strategic planning, management operation, human resources management, marketing strategy and non-compliance of labor laws, and taxes regulations. These challenges pose legal ramifications for their business.
Looking at the competitors, Domino’s has been evenly prized with Pizza hut. But the prices are high as compared to KFC and McDonalds. Affordability is the key to the success of Domino’s. To maintain the price level many new and innovative schemes are launched regularly. It gives its customers value for one’s money always.

The most important one would be the Threat of Rivalry. There is a lot of competition between pizza franchises and local restaurants. Many of these franchises and restaurants sell similar products for near the same price and size, which makes the switching costs low. They use advertising and promotion to gain more customers. For example, Pizza Hut offers a dining area for their customer as well as a lunch buffet with healthy alternatives.
