“Friendship is the hardest thing in the world to explain. It’s not something you learn in school.” Muhammad Ali, the American professional boxer and activist knows that friendship is anything but easy. Especially ones that are deep, real, and lasting. In the earliest years of elementary school, the day is filled with collaborative lessons to learn about sharing, manners, and turn taking. But in reality, the majority of what kids learn about being a friend comes from everything in between all that, from the nonschool parts of the school day to being a friend at recess. Shared interests and similar preferences are often how friendships begin to develop. Very first friendships come from discovering that someone likes to do the same thing as someone else, and then choosing to do it at the same time together. Schools mainly focus on students’ academic performances and not their social development or emotional learning. That’s why most strong friendships are built outside of the school environment. When someone looks back on all they’ve done with their best friend, they’ll begin to notice what an important part of their life their best friend is. Best friends are our support system, they are our go to people, always keeping us laughing, smiling, and living. No distance, time, or conflict can keep two best friends apart. They are the reason for someone’s smile and all their laughs. They are the reason we find small miracles and a light at the end of a tunnel.
