Documentary filmmaker Ted Grouya, better known to his friends as Teddy G., gave me the most encouragement and help in finalizing my decision to move to Thailand. Born in the United States, Teddy G attended school in Denmark and Australia, graduating from the highly ranked Australian National University in Canberra before working at the US embassy. He also graduated from the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, then gave up a promising future and the stability of working for the United States government to pursue

When I began traveling to Thailand and began thinking of moving to the country on a more permanent basis, Teddy G. was the first person I told. Whether by fate, coincidence, or luck, it just so happened he had been to Thailand several times and knew the country well. “Go now, before it’s too late,” he said. “You have nothing holding you back. Now’s the time!” “I know, you’re right. I will.” Until I made The Decision, I never completely believed my own words. Without Ted, I might not have moved to Thailand, met my life, had two sons, and lived a life many people dream of living. Time and time again he would bring out his photo albums stuffed full of shots from his trips. Not only did he tell me of his adventures, providing me with much-needed information, he also helped keep me focused when frustration entered into the equation. A few years after moving to Thailand, Teddy informed me that two of his good friends, Chuck and Dave were coming to Thailand for a holiday. "I got a couple of buddies who are coming to Thailand soon," he said, nonchalantly. “Can you show them around? Give em a good time?” "Do I know these guys?" "You met Chuck when we were out barhopping one night," he said, trying to job my memory. “Dave is older,

Erik Alvarez Professor Bogusky December 02, 2015 INTRODUCTION Hello everyone, one of my earliest memories that I have from school is from my first day of kindergarten. I remember walking into my ESL, english as a second language class, & instantly being questioned as to why I was in there. My fellow classmates assumed I was asian because of how I looked and teased me to the point of tears. In reality, I am of Guatemalan origin.

Dear fellow nasty women and bad hombres, America is one the greatest experiments in freedom and liberty history has ever known. We are a nation that was built on the minds and ideals of immigrants. Our Founding Fathers created America so that everyone could have a chance at "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". Those are aspects of my country, I would never change because they are what make us unique. The glow of America casts a ripple of hope upon those who struggle.
How would you feel if you and your family were denied the opportunity to a better life or had to wait years for one? The immigrants goal is to strive for a better future for themselves and their family. Coming here will help them achieve that goal. You may be thinking why cant they have a good future where they live? In some cases, the country they live in could be poor, not have many schools, is not safe, etc.
Initially, I was apprehensive to go out or try anything in the country, but I took a leap of faith, and it was for the best. I fully submerged myself and tried native foods such as balut and blood stew, and also sang karaoke almost every night with the natives. San Miguel was the local beer, and I drank my fair share. My time spent in the Philippines and others countries showed me that other places outside of little Mississippi are full of excitement and life. The Navy would continue to send me all across the world, and the time spent in other countries helped reshape my perspective.
