Theda Perdue`s Cherokee Women: Gender and Culture Change, 1700-1835, is a book that greatly depicts what life had been like for many Native Americans as they were under European Conquering. This book was published in 1998, Perdue was influenced by a Cherokee Stomp Dance in northeastern Oklahoma. She had admired the Cherokee society construction of gender which she used as the subject of this book. Though the title Cherokee Women infers that the book focuses on the lives of only Cherokee women, Perdue actually shines light upon the way women 's roles affected the Native cultures and Cherokee-American relations. In the book, there is a focus on the way that gender roles affected the way different tribes were run in the 1700 and 1800`s.
Stand Watie was born at Oothcaloga in the Cherokee Nation, Georgia on December 12, 1806. Stand Watie 's name in the Cherokee Nation was De gata ga, which means "he stands. " Watie was also known by other aliases, such as Isaac S. Watie. As a young boy he attended Moravian Mission School at Springplace Georgia, and moved on to serve as a clerk of the Cherokee Supreme Court and Speaker of the Cherokee National Council.
Andrew Jackson really liked power, some would say he is obsessed with it. Andrew Jackson had an idea called the Indian Removal Act and the Trail of Tears and what it did was that it kicked out the indians from west of the Mississippi. The indians felt very strongly about protecting their land because if you you think about it, what if you had just 1 day to pack up all of the things in your house and had to leave forever. Plus what if on that journey to find a new home, along the way you lost some people like family that you love and care about. That is what the indians had to go through and that changed their lives forever.
Would you disregard the lives of thousands of people for wealth and power? That is what Andrew Jackson did when he endorsed the Indian Removal Act in 1830. This act resulted in the forced migration of several tribes from the southeastern region of the United States. Jackson believed that this was the best way to protect the indians from being scattered and destroyed. He claimed that gaining more land for the white settlers would increase economic progress.
The case of Cherokee Nation V Georgia was a very important one. For a long time the Cherokee Nation lived in Georgia for hundreds of years. The Cherokee Nation has helped shape our country. When Hernando de Soto came to what is now the United States, he encountered at least three Cherokee Native American tribes. In the year of 1711, the English have given firearms to the Cherokees in exchange for their help in fighting the Tuscarora in the Tuscarora War.
Andrew Jackson’s Effect on the Cherokee Indians and the Trail of Tears In March of 1832, the case of Worcester v. Georgia was ruled in the U.S. Supreme Court. This case nullified a Georgia law that was contrived to control the way that the U.S. citizens accessed the Cherokee country. Chief Justice John Marshall believed that only the federal government should be allowed to do that.
One of the biggest and most powerful tribes in South Carolina was the Cherokee tribe. The were also known as the “real people”. THe Cherokee tribe was huge. Just one village could have over 600 people in it, and most of their villages were lined with a thing called palisade surrounding it for protection. Their leaders could be made up of men and women, and either gender could own land.

The federal government sought to expand its control of territory and resources across America. The one big problem the U.S. faced were the Indians who resisted their removal. Georgia signed the Compact of 1802 which stated that if Georgia were to give up their western claims, the U.S. would eradicate American Indian land titles in Georgia and remove them (Lecture 14).
On July 17, 1830, the Cherokee nation published an appeal to all of the American people. United States government paid little thought to the Native Americans’ previous letters of their concerns. It came to the point where they turned to the everyday people to help them. They were desperate. Their withdrawal of their homeland was being caused by Andrew Jackson signing the Indian Removal Act into law on May 28, 1830.
The Trail of Tears event of the removal of the Indians happened in 1838. “At the beginning of the 1830s, nearly 125,000 Native Americans lived on millions of acres of land in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina and Florida–land their ancestors had occupied and cultivated for generations. ”(History.com Staff). In this event, the Cherokee community of Native Americans was forced by the US government to move from their native home in the Southern part of the contemporary America to what is known as the Indian territories in Oklahoma. Arguments over land, restrictions, and laws were common amongst the Indians and settlers/whites.
When the Europeans began colonizing the New World, they had a problematic relationship with the Native Americans. The Europeans sought to control a land that the Natives inhabited all their lives. They came and decided to take whatever they wanted regardless of how it affected the Native Americans. They legislated several laws, such as the Indian Removal Act, to establish their authority. The Indian Removal Act had a negative impact on the Native Americans because they were driven away from their ancestral homes, forced to adopt a different lifestyle, and their journey westwards caused the deaths of many Native Americans.
Indians had lived in the same areas for many years and had become much more accustomed to being civilized and had even started schools, making laws and becoming farmers. But all of that didn’t matter, there was increasing pressure to open up the area the Indians inhabited so the white men could settle there. The Indian Removal Act stated that all Indians must move to lands west of the Mississippi River, Jackson said the Indians would receive money for the land they lost and that all expenses would be paid for. The act was supposed to be voluntary but they were pressured to go and the tribes that did not go peacefully were forced. While most tribes did go peacefully the Cherokee Indians wanted to fight the Removal Act and took it to the Supreme
It is not a new idea that women can function well in positions of authority? There have been many women who played crucial roles in leadership positions throughout history. The history of the Cherokee Indians contains several examples of women who have risen to positions of influence in their society! Such women were named “Beloved Women” by the tribe. A Cherokee woman could, “take her husband’s place in war.” and be given the name “War Woman” as a result.
The picture that depicts homes in the cliffs were built by the Anasazi who lived in the Southwest (Four Corners) culture region and the long houses were built by the Iroquois who lived in the Great Lakes (New York) culture region. The Anasazi modified their environment by irrigating the desert, building roads, and by building homes into the cliff because they needed to be able to farm in the dry desert, travel and trade, and also be able to defend themselves from their warlike neighbors. The Iroquois, however, modified their environment by clearing land to farm and building the long houses as they did not have to defend against as many attacks. There have been plenty of encounters with Native Americans being forced from their land but this is one of the most significant. Native Americans had three options when settlers first came: they could assimilate with the encroaching European population, they could be relocated, or they could genocide. While being relocated there was major death count. To stop the death count from theses relocations Congress attempted to create a separate Homestead Act for the Natives called the Dawes Act but it failed. So instead of helping the Native Americans they decided to turn them into European Natives and change their ways.
