The author describes how the behaviors and beliefs of whites in the south had an impact on how the multiple generations of the Bosket males valued their respect and their reputation. The first generation of males began in the 1890’s with Clifton (Pud) Bosket who was alive during the worst time for lynching’s and the Jim Crow era. He had no education and hated the way whites treated blacks. He worked as a sharecropper under a boss that used a whip for punishment. On this day, as the landowner lifted the whip to hit Pud he snatched the whip away from him and said “this is the last nigger you’re gonna whip”.
1. Explain the author's primary point. The author seeks to bring to light the unfair treatment of the Negros by the whites in the places they live in. He also seeks to show that leaders only make empty promises to their people. Brutal cases are most among the Negros as they are attacked and their cases go unnoticed or ignored.
The book focuses on the Great Migration of Blacks in the 20th century to the West or North. Similar to other migrations, there was a catalyst. For this period of history from 1915 to 1975, it was deep racism. The South, while maybe not individually, had a penchant for expressing its belief in the inferiority of Blacks. It ascribed a level of worth that was even lower than that of animals to Blacks.
The major thesis in this book, are broken down into two components. The first is how we define racism, and the impact that definition has on how we see and understand racism. Dr. Beverly Tatum chooses to use the definition given by “David Wellman that defines racism as a system of advantages based on race” (1470). This definition of racism helps to establish Dr. Tatum’s theories of racial injustice and the advantages either willingly or unwillingly that white privilege plays in our society today. The second major thesis in this book is the significant role that a racial identity has in our society.
Loving versus Virginia takes place in rural Central Point, Virginia in 1967. During this time period segregation and discrimination were still a hefty part of the social standards of society. The Supreme Court case involved the controversy of the young love birds named Richard Loving and Mildred, maiden name, Jeter being married. The two were high school hearts. The two did live in Virginia but went out of state to pursue getting legally married, which they did.
Free Blacks: How Free Were They in the North? During the 1860s, 46% of all free blacks lived in the North. Based on that, many would have reason to believe that the North would be a safe-haven for the free black population. That would be partially true because the abolition of slavery in the North provided some protection. But even though free blacks in the North had some freedoms, blacks lived a very restricted life with little suffrage, discrimination, limits on economic opportunities, and segregation.
Since the 1930’s, milestones have been reached as to racial equality and equal rights in America, but there are still issues between black and white. Today, racism is an existing part of society. News headlines of “Police Brutality” flash across the television screen from time to time. Racial stereotypes are a common mindset for some people. Back in the 1930’s however, racism and segregation was everywhere.

In the novel, Lyddie, by Katherine Paterson a 15 year-old girl named Lyddie was hired as a servant to help pay off her family farm’s debts. Lyddie wants to reunite her family once again…. somehow.
Lions of Little Rock by Kristin Levine is about a girl, Marlee, who can't be friends with someone because she's colored. Marlee lives during a time when colored people didn't have the same right as white people in America. Marlee faces many challenges in the society from many people, who disagree with letting colored people have the same rights as white people. Marlee must learn to speak out and stand up for what she believes in. Marlee was a shy and quiet girl at the beginning of 7th grade.
Capitalization and Pronouns Gwendolyn Brooks employs the use of capitalization and pronouns in her poem “A Bronzeville Mother Loiters in Mississippi. Meanwhile a Mississippi Mother Burns Bacon” as a way to demonstrate the tensions between white femininity and black masculinity in the south during the era directly preceding the Civil Rights Movement. During this time, the white man was afforded the ability to dominate over the word of white women and black men. Throughout this poem, Brooks portrays the complex dimensions that race and gender played in the murder of Emmett Till.
Many people always speak of how today’s world is complex and convoluted, as if it was simple before that particular point. To build a future for one self, they must first know the past to progress. Frederick Douglass wrote a short essay on the Color Line, he does not directly state a definition of the color line, but rather explains the current racial affections, with in depth of the two conflicting races. He speaks on how the white philosophers spoke open and confidently about how the Negro was inferior. The Anglo Saxon had always been prejudice against the opposite race, it was their natural supposedly, but this is not based in science.
As a young country, the United States was a land of prejudice and discrimination. Wanting to grow their country, white Americans did what they had to in order to make sure that they were always on top, and that they were always the superior race. It did not matter who got hurt along the way because everything that they did was eventually justified by their thinking that all other races were inferior to them. A Different Mirror by Ronald Takaki describes the prejudice and discrimination against African Americans and Native Americans in the early history of the United States.
I. Introduction Ashley Montagu was a 20th century anthropologist whose work was based on the belief that there was no superior race within the Homosapien populace. Writing books such as Man’s Most Dangerous Myth: The Fallacy of Race, he was someone who was very forward thinking in his ideals and beliefs. Within his works he showed the readers that all humans are part of the Homosapien lineage instead of being two separate species, along with stating there is no race that is more superior than the other (Montagu 1972). Both ideas were still being fought against in his time culturally. Ragtime and the Prevalence of Racism in the Early 1900s “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” - Martin Luther King Jr. In 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, and only 7 years later, E.L. Doctorow published the novel Ragtime. One of Ragtime’s main themes is a social commentary on the racism of the early 1900s.
