Growing up, people tell you to think about others, to not be selfish, and to put others before yourself. But as you grow up you learn that sometimes you need to be selfish; sometimes you need to put yourself first. I tend to put other’s needs before my own and I have learned that it is an issue and something I need to work on fixing.
Do not get me wrong, being a kind and generous person is a wonderful thing, but when it begins to affect your well-being, that is when you have to draw the line. I used to think prioritizing others' feelings over your own was normal, but I recently come to the realization that it is not.
When reading The Alchemist, it amazed me how much I could identify with the book. A quote from the book I really related to was, “He had to choose between something he had become accustomed to and something he wanted to have,” (Coelho 30) I wanted to be happy, I wanted

When always thinking about others before yourself, it take a toll on your mental health and makes you feel upset. You are never thinking about how you may feel, only how others may feel.
In addition, I would also worry about how others would think of me. I always would always worry about my appearance, my personality, and my attitude because I worried what others would think. “Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own” (Coelho 8). I really loved this quote in The Alchemist because it perfectly depicts how society is.
People judge others and already have pictures of how someone is or how they should be in their heads. If you don’t fit that image of how everyone wants you to be, you don’t fit in. You are viewed as different and you do not want to be different, you want to be just like everyone else. When growing up, I realized that it is alright to be different, it is alright to not be like everyone
A selfish motive will lead you to having a negative view on the world and other people that are around you. A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines is a factual fiction novel that takes place in the 1940s where a black man “Jefferson” is at the wrong place at the wrong time during a shootout. All of the men died except Jefferson so he gets convicted for the murders and is sentenced to death by electric chair. Grant is a teacher who wants to leave his community but his aunt “Miss Emma” wants him to go see Jefferson while he is on death row and is tasked to make Jefferson a man before he dies. Throughout A Lesson before Dying Gaines Characterizes Grant as obligated and then committed in order to convey that a selfish motivation leaves you with a negative view on the world.
Initially, the purpose of this quote is to show that when a person realizes something they long for, their soul awakes from past or current events in the universe. The Alchemist showed a very wide range of point of views about life, and for that reason I recommend this book 100% as a guide for the soul and pursuing ones dreams rather than a book for a
Nothing prevented me from continuing to enjoy the pleasure of reading, save for a few bad books I’ve had to read for school. Having read The Alchemist, I realize that I have many inner resources that I could use to continue my “journey”, specifically, searching out more books to
Why be different to just fit in? Why be different to just please others, because at the end of the day you are the person you are. People are faced with this challenge every day all over the world and you might not even realize it. Everybody has done it at least once in their life, but why fit in when you can just live your life and be yourself. People may say it is peer pressure but at the end of the day, an individual may choose whether to/or not to belong.
Everything in the world is unique, no two things are the same no matter what. Whether it be mass-produced clothing, snowflakes, twins, or handmade jewelry none of it is the same as another. Yet it is expected for them to be different, after all, it’s impossible to have an exact copy of something. Imagine though if people did expect things to be the same. No not something but people, imagine if everyone was to be the same, and if not you would suffer for it.
Many people in today's society are deciding not to be themselves, but rather conforming to the norm. People are living their lives using a counterfeit identity instead of being the original person that God made them out to be. God made everyone different and unique for a reason; He did not intend for everyone to be the same. The problem that is prevalent across the world is that nobody wants to be seen has weird or different from everybody else, so they do whatever it takes to be seen as normal. When people make that decision to fall into the pressures of fitting in, they tend to lose sight of who they really are.
No one wants to be different but, everyone is. One of the main reason is culture. There are so many cultures that it makes it seem you are different from everyone else. In “Fish Cheeks” by Amy Tan, and “Taco Head” by Viola Candales both narrators face internal conflict with their culture and how people see them. They struggle with who they are, and who they want to be.
In the book The Alchemist there are alot of quotes meaning and lessons and a lot of meaningful things throughout reading the book. There are alot of life lessons in the Alchemist that all of us can relate to but the one that stood out to me the most was when in page 55 when santiago told the crystal merchant the owner of the crystal shop santiago told him “We have to take advantage when luck is on our side” that really stood out to me. Another quote that stood to me was on page 98 when The Alchemist said to the Englishmen he said “go and try”. A quote that is like a life lesson was when in page 35 the wise men was telling the story to santiago and the wise men said “The secret of happiness is to see all the marvels of the world and never
Claudia Arevalo English 1 Mr.Paul 3/22/23 In the play “Raisin in the Sun'' by Lorraine Hansberry, the author conveys the idea that people can become selfish when trying to achieve the American Dream. This is shown through multiple events throughout the play when the characters search for a better way of life. For example, when Walter made a misogynist comment and told his sister to settle on becoming a nurse like all women instead of a doctor.
Everyone has a natural desire to fit in. Everyone has a natural desire to be accepted by others. These desires are strong enough to cause individuals to give up there uniqueness. We are all told at a young age that everyone is different and that is wonderful. However, societal norms contradict this idea.
Being selfish is only part of who we are and what we need to flourish according to virtue ethicists; Aristotle,
Sometimes we want to be different, but we can't. We want to stand out, but we are afraid to do so. And sometimes, we might form our own opinion. However, sooner or later we are forced to change our own opinion so that society accept us. Modern life is confusing.
Selfishness and selflessness can be balanced, and this balance is crucial to a functioning
Imagine this: you are living in a discriminatory world full of people who do not understand you, and choose to judge you by your differences instead of getting to know you. If you are even the slightest bit different. The slightest distance from ordinary, you are judged. You do not get to fight for them to know you, because as soon as they place stereotypes on you. They decide who you are supposed to be.
Everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear. As this anonymous quote elucidates, fear acts as a barrier that essentially traps us in our comfort zone, limiting our experiences and holds one back from achieving his or her potential. In The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, the protagonist must overcome his own fear through obstacles that he comes across as fear diverts one from their purpose. To begin with, Santiago displays his fears throughout the book, and these fears are what hinders him from achieving his Personal Legend. Santiago displays an immense terror of failure.
