In the late 1830’s, where the United States was growing rapidly, whites faced an obstacle while trying to settle in the South. This area of land was home of the Cherokee and other Indian tribes. The Cherokee Indians signed treaties hoping that white settlers would not come for their land. Prompted by the state of Georgia along with the president, Andrew Jackson, whom did not like Indians, expelled the Cherokee Indians from their homeland. Cherokee’s pleas to Georgia and the Supreme Court did little to stop their removal.
They weren’t allow to leave the Reserve or they would not return or be sentence to Jail. When injuries, illness or medication was needed the army took long time to response with doctors, emergency help and took hours before seriously needed medication was given to the one’s in need. The food supply was being searched and damaged, the army made it very hard for the First Nation’s to receive any needed supplies even with the knowledge of children were within the reserve. The First Nation’s human rights and protection rights were violated, they were beaten, and women were raped and assaulted. Being warrior with issues and situations like these would have been overwhelming, the army was sent by the Government with full demands to take the Mohawk’s land, of course they knew the Mohawk’s had no awareness and the claim wasn’t going to go down without a fight.
The event began February 27, 1973 and ended 71 days later in May 9, 1973. The failed impeachment of tribal chairman, Dick Wilson led to the occupation of Wounded Knee. During the occupation, “two Native Americans, Frank Clearwater and Lawrence Lamont, died and one FBI agent, Lloyd Grimm, was shot and paralyzed” (Exhibits - American Indian Movement). The intensity of the siege lead to the death and injury of people. This shows that free people have to fight for their freedom and liberty at the expense of their lives.
The Archaic Indians were the Indians that roamed the United States after the Ice Age. Archaic culture, any of the ancient cultures of North and South America that developed by Paleo- Indian traditions and led to the adoption and agriculture. Archaic cultures are defined by a group of common characteristics rather than a particular time period or location; Mesoamerica, Archaic cultures that existed from approximately 8,000-2,000BC. The primary characteristic of Archaic cultures is a change in substance and lifestyle; their paleo-indians pressures more highly nomadic, specialized hunters and gatherers who relied on few species of wild plants and game, but Archaic peoples lived in larger groups, were sedentary for part of the year, and partook
A Native American tribe, the Wampanoags, once a documented population of 12,000. They were located in southeastern Massachusetts, including the coastal islands of Martha’s Vineyard. Unfortunately the Wampanoag tribes language died in the mid 19th century, but in recent years the language is being revived through a language reclamation project. Luckily this Native American language has the ability to be revived despite the horrors that the language and the tribe went through.
In the late 1600’s, many European settlers arrived in North America in hopes of escaping the hardships they faced back home. America initially promised colonists the wealth, religious freedom, and escape from oppression they desired. New England was home to dense forests, and hills which was not optimal for crop growth. Therefore, the colonists directed their attention towards trade and commerce. The people in this region were devoutly religious and believed in the education of children.
The United States sent armies into the Native American lands, mistreating the Native Americans, and caused trouble against them by sparkling conflicts and wars. “It is not, of course, to be understood that the government of the United States is at the mercy of Indians; but thousands of its citizens are, even thousands of families. Their exposed situation on the extreme verge of settlement affords a sufficient justification to the government for buying off the hostility of the Savages, excited and exasperated as they are…by the invasion of their hunting grounds and the threatened extinction of their game.” (Document 4) The United States government introduced policies for Native Americans to have a better life, but in fact, they kept them in
Native American Research: Chief Pontiac Intro Chief Pontiac is a Native American that is important to the United States’ history. He was a part of the Ottawa tribe and led the American Indians to a revolution also known as the Pontiac War or Pontiac’s Rebellion, which was against the British when they first came to America. He wasn’t afraid to die for his rights. He believed that they all had rights to live in America and to live how they wanted to live. I chose him for my Native American Research because he was a courageous Native American hero.
From colonial times until the end of the Indian Wars in 1890, the people in America went through a series of unfair and unfortunate events. Mainly for the Indians which are also called the first peoples. These events could have been handled with much more consideration for the Indians. There are many times when the Americans went too far including the Removal Act of 1830, the Reservation System, and the Act for the Government and Protection of Indians.
In the late 1500s the Native Americans of the Great Plains got an amazing new tool that would change their place in the world for 200 years. That tool would bring them great wealth and many luxuries, but at the cost of great pain and suffering. That tool they called it the great mysterious dog, we call it the horse . The Native Americans would use this tool to explore ways to transport goods and people. As well as create an opportunity to encounter and exchange with the Spanish and French through trade.
The American Revolution lasted six years and the impacts of it were everlasting(Schultz, 2010). The effects were felt by every group of people in North America and many worldwide. Even though George Washington had all of his troops vaccinated against smallpox, the colonists were not so fortunate and as a results some estimates are that as many as one hundred and thirty thousand people died from this dreaded disease. This loss of life combined with the divisions among the colonies into those loyal to Britain and those who wanted freedom would forever change the way of life for the colonists.
Throughout the history of the United States, there generally have been dozens of particularly social movements, which is fairly significant. From the African American Civil Rights Movement in 1954 to the feminism movement in 1920, protests for all intents and purposes have helped these groups basically earn rights and fight injustice in a really major way. Some injustices that these groups face range from lack of voting rights to police brutality, or so they essentially thought. The indigenous people of North America aren’t actually immune to these injustices, basically contrary to popular belief. Between 1870 and 1900, an estimated 25 million immigrants had made their way to the United States. This era, titled the Gilded Age, played an extremely important role in the shaping of American society. The United States saw great economic growth and social changes; however, as the name suggested, the Gilded Ages hid a profound number of problems. During this period of urbanization, the publicizing of wealth and prosperity hid the high rates of poverty, crime, and corruption. European immigrants who had come to the United States in search of jobs and new opportunities had fallen into poverty as well as poor working and living conditions.
When the Indian police took the Native Americans to a camp near Wounded Knee, they were listening to orders and not rebelling. They gave the Europeans no reason to shoot at them. Somewhere in-between 153 to 300 Native Americans were killed (Gitlin, 2011, pg. 91). Men, women, and children were killed. None of them had done anything wrong.
Throughout the 19th century Native Americans were treated far less than respectful by the United States’ government. This was the time when the United States wanted to expand and grow rapidly as a land, and to achieve this goal, the Native Americans were “pushed” westward. It was a memorable and tricky time in the Natives’ history, and the US government made many treatments with the Native Americans, making big changes on the Indian nation. Native Americans wanted to live peacefully with the white men, but the result of treatments and agreements was not quite peaceful. This precedent of mistreatment of minorities began with Andrew Jackson’s indian removal policies to the tribes of Oklahoma (specifically the Cherokee indians) in 1829 because of the lack of respect given to the indians during the removal laws.
