Throughout America's history, African Americans suffered racism, bias, including constant scolding during the 19th century. Nevertheless, perspectives shifted distinctly, when the American Dream surged through hearts of the previously shunned race, migrating in mass numbers, known as The Great Migration. With the traveling immigrants, they brought about Jazz to liven up the dull streets with legendary names such as Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington. Their new sounds caught thousands of people’s attention, improving the African American race to new confidence as never before. As a result, their legacy not only established new grounds for African Americans but also contributed to America’s modern swing to the sounds of Jazz.

John Sides’ LA City Limits: African American Los Angeles from the Great Depression to the Present focuses on the migration of southern African Americans to the west between the early 1900’s and the 1970’s. Although there was a great migration of Southern African Americans to the north, there was more of an impact on African American lives in western cities like Los Angeles. The South offered little to no chance for advancement for rural blacks with the dwindling southern economy that once thrived on the backs of slaves after it came to an abrupt halt and pushed the oppressive, unfair restrictions on their lives in place, called the Jim Crow laws. With a sharp increase in the demand for labor in northern factories due to World War I, African Americans in the South and white factory owners from the North saw the chance for a mutually beneficial enterprise, that would later be referenced in history as The Great
The United States had many economic problems after becoming a country, and as many other countries looked overseas for solutions. When America gained independence it was flooded with immigrants, urbanizing the cities and creating many changes. One change is that manufacturing became more common and soon it was making more money than agriculture. But Britain, Germany, and several other powers put a tax on imported manufactured goods in an attempt to preserve their own factories. So the US just started looking to lesser developed countries such as China to sell them.
More than 200,000 African Americans were deployed to France during WW1. Their service stirred black pride and raised the African American community 's political and social expectations, even though it did little to improve race relations in the U.S. More of the country 's racial demographics changed considerably as a result of the war. New jobs in manufacturing and other industries, combined with a shortage of cheap European labor, translated into opportunities for African Americans in New York, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Chicago and other northern side cities. Drawn by the potential for better pay and living conditions, approximately half a million southern black agricultures moved north from 1914 to 1920 in what is known as the Great Migration.
Some Americans believed that United States had the right to take land that belonged to others for their needs and that the “moral justification” for this was that God intended for the America to grow and expand this was named the “manifest destiny.” To the average white American migration to the west meant a better living for families. Our readings suggest that during the 1830s-1850s as a result of the possibility of gold and territory expansion land was vast which created economic opportunities this made moving westward appealing to farmers, ranchers, miners, teachers, servants and others. Families traveled by wagons at times in harsh conditions.
The Great Migration and/in the Congregation The Great Migration was the migration occurred within the United States between 1910 and 1970 which saw the displacement of about seven million African Americans from the southern states to those in the North, Midwest and West. The reasons that led thousands of African Americans to leave the southern states and move to the northern industrial cities were both economic and social, related to racism, job opportunities in the industrial cities and the search of better lives, the attempts to escape racism and the Jim Crow Laws that took them away the right to vote. As every social phenomena, the Great Migration had both positive and negative effects; in my opinion the Great Migration can be considered a negative development in the short and medium term, but, if we analyze the benefits brought to the African-American communities in the long term, their fight for integration has shaped the history of the United States in its progress to democracy and civil rights.
Between that time, African American Families moved from the South to the North and to the West. Following the Civil War, many African Americans had packed up and migrated to urbanized areas like Chicago and New York. By 1920, almost 300,000 African Americans had moved away from the south, Harlem being a very popular destination for the traveling families. New arrivals found jobs in slaughterhouses, factories and foundries, but working conditions were strenuous to their bodies and sometimes dangerous. Many didn 't consider the amounts of people that would be migrating to New York and that made competition for living space harder.
The Great Migration was a time of change it was a time where African-Americans had the chance for a nice life. During this time people of color were moving to the northern half of the USA, in order to get a new start. During this they had to leave the only life they knew in hopes for something better in a different place. To begin with, after World War 1 began in 1914 industries lacked the laborers in their urban cities.
Also during the World War 1, there was a great population shift from the rural cities in the South to the cities in the North. This period is known as the Great Migration from 1916 to 1970. This era ties back to my thesis because it shows how after 1919 African Americans still suffered from unequal rights and awful job
Neoclassical Theory of Migration One of the oldest and most commonly used theory used to explain migration is the Neoclassical theory of Migration. Neoclassical Theory (Sjaastad 1962; Todaro 1969) proposes that international migration is connected to the global supply and demand for labor. Nations with scarce labor supply and high demand will have high wages that attract immigrants from nations with a surplus of labor. The main assumption of neoclassical theory of migration is led by the push factors which cause person to leave and the pull forces which draw them to come to that nation. The Neoclassical theory states that the major cause of migration is different pay and access to jobs even though it looks at other factors contributing to the departure, the essential position is taken by individual higher wages benefit element.
