Elie Wiesel’s somber speech, “The Perils of Indifference”, demonstrated the harsh reality of the numerous evils harvesting in the world. The main evil though was simply indifference, or a lack of concern. As a young Jewish boy, he faced the wickedness of the Holocaust, imprisoned at Buchenwald and Auschwitz and also losing both his parents and younger sister. The speaker saw atrocious horrors and suffered for a prolonged amount of time. Why was this permitted?
The search of identity is an issue familiar to contemporary society as well as to the society of 1963 when Betty Friedan published her feminist manifesto The Feminine Mystique. The main idea of Friedan 's article, "The Importance of Work," is the question of how individuals can recognize their full capacities and achieve identity. She argues that human identity is meaningful purposeful work, and individuals are not identified as women or men, just human based upon their work. Friedan believes work is what an individual does in his or her life; for example, snowboarding, songwriting, hockey, football etc. Friedan was an author, an activist, and the first president of the National Organization for Women.
A strange question to ask since looking at present day, many people will say, “Obviously”; however, it’s not that simple of an assumption to make. Jared Diamond’s article “The Worst Mistake in the History of the Human Race” is a clear indication that the answer is not that clear cut. His arguments are persuasive and agreeable, but not enough to say that human kind introducing farming did no on any favors. Throughout the novel, Betty Friedan breaks new ground, concocting the idea that women can discover personal fulfillment by straying away from their original roles. Friedan ponders on the idea that The Feminine Mystique is the cause for a vast majority of women during that time period to feel confined by their occupations around the house; therefore, restricting them from discovering who they are as women. Friedan’s novel is well known for creating a different kind of feminism and rousing various women across the nation.
As everyone know, chance is the absence of any cause of events that can be predicted, understood,or controlled. They are given to every lifes, but not everyone can take the chances on time. Sometimes if we missed one chance, we might get another one. But sometimes, we might never get it again. Cry Liberty: The Great Stono-River Slave Rebellion of 1739 was written by Professor Peter C. Hoffer, who taught as a historian at the University of Georgia. This novel is a brief, yet very informative piece of work that provides a re-examination of a series of incidents that occurred during the Stono Rebellion (which transpired on September 9, 1739). This rebellion manifested once a group of about 20 slaves had broken into a store alongside the Stono River, nearby Charles Town, which is now known as Charleston, South Carolina. The author did an excellent job recreating events in this book and developing the question of whether or not it was actually a rebellion.
Certain ideals that are valued in American society have caused concern in some people due to the alarming threat they pose. In the passage, “America Needs its Nerds,” by Leonid Fridman, the author discusses a social problem he sees that is prominent in the United States. Throughout the reading, Fridman mentions how often anti-intellectualism is seen and why it is our issue in America. Fridman’s purpose in writing this passage is to bring the issue to the minds of people and to make them question their own personal stance. Fridman uses different strategies in order to convey his idea that people who are curious and serious about knowledge should not be labeled a nerd.
In this essay, "Why Literature Matters", author Dana Gioia sets up an argument about literature. Which she uses various ways to persuade her audience be in favor of her proposal; by showing statistic evidence, facts, and historical evidence, as well as some ironies, diction, and the appeals to reader's emotion. First of all, Gioia begins with strong appeals to reader's logos by clearly laying out the statistic source. For example, "According to the 2002 survey of Public Participation in the Arts, the reading population of the Americans is declining. " In turn, is an attempt to point out the thesis statement and make the readers to think out about this topic wile reading through her essay.
The short story “Good People” is written by David Foster Wallace in 2007. The story follows Lane A. Dean Jr. and his girlfriend, Sheri Fisher as they sit at a picnic by the lake. The narration is told by Lane Dean as he analyzes the life that he has and wonders if he loves Sheri. “Good People” explores human nature and the topic of hypocrisy, as the two characters are devoted Christians, but are dealing with an unwanted pregnancy. Lane Dean thinks of the option of an abortion, but as a Christian it is seemed as sinful and he does not want to go to Hell.

Fred Anderson's work on the Seven Year War center's upon an argument that the events during the conflict led up to and contributed to the American Revolution and the founding of the United States. Moreover, Anderson argues that the seeds of civil strife between England and its colonial possessions were sown at a time when English victory in North America was assured.
According to the article “Created Equal”, Milton and Rose Friedman discusse three different ways that are considered to be equal. It includes equality before God, equality of opportunity and equality of outcome. They also believe that the “freedom preserves the opportunity for today’s disadvantaged to become tomorrow’s privileged in the process, enable almost everyone, from top to bottom, to enjoy a fuller and richer life.” Finally, Friedmans conclude that a society that puts equality before freedom will get neither, and those that put freedom before equality will get a high degree of both. From my point of view, I do agree with Friedmans that equality of outcome is in clear conflict with liberty which government gets more power and getting bigger.
