South Rejection Destroyed the Reconstruction. After the civil war there were efforts sent out to reconstruct the south, and they went horribly wrong. During the civil war the south was totally destroyed. So the government decided to send help to rebuild the south’s economy and tradition.
The KKK thought they were holy men, torturing a people into submission. They thought they were clean and if you were black, by even a drop, you were unclean and
The KKK is an influential part of society that is responsible for hate crimes throughout
The Klu-Klux-Klan was a white supremacist group that opposed “Reconstruction” and equal rights for freed slaves (Hook Exercise). They, to my standards, really would do whatever it takes to stop Reconstruction, even if it meant killing innocent people for that. John W. Stephens, a former senator from Caswell, was brutally murdered by none other than the Klu-Klux-Klan in a Grand Jury room (Doc. A Par.1). John W. Stephens was stabbed five to six times then even hanged on a hook in the same jury room.
The KKK helped the South kill Reconstruction because the killed a Republican State Senator for supporting Reconstruction policies. “ It is my mournful duty to inform you that our friend John W. Stephens, State Senator from Caswell, is dead. He was foully murdered by the Klu-Klux in the Grand Jury room of the
Up until the Ku Klux Act, the Ku Klux Klan’s (KKK) influence spread throughout the Southern states and acted as a violent and driving continuation of the Confederate movement after the Civil War. It was created right after the Civil War by six Confederate Army veterans. Not only had the South just suffered their most humiliating military loss, but they also lost the institution of slavery, money, government power and beloved family members. As a result of their loss in the Civil War and the emancipation of their slaves, the Southern white man felt great embarrassment and humiliation. Though he could not preserve the institution of slavery, he now felt an obligation to preserve and reassert white supremacy.
The new Klan was against anyone who was not an American Native. This group was based near Atlanta, however there was a large group of the Klan in New Jersey. The new Klan was a sign that the people of the United States were sensing a change in culture and they were not comfortable with it. Therefore they decided to take it upon themselves to make the change stop. In 1924 it was reported that there were four million members in the new Klan.
The KKK was a white nationalized group that included former veterans, which created the first branch of the group. The Klansmen founded in 1865, in Pulaski, Tennessee, is now known as the birthplace of the KKK. This group dedicated themselves to a campaign of violence to Republican leaders and voters. The KKK targeted many people based on their race or sexuality , including, Gays, Immigrants, African Americans, and Catholics(KKK history). Jim Crow laws,
Who killed Reconstruction: The North or South? Following the civil war, the south killed the reconstruction of the United States. (Reconstruction was putting the country back together after the Civil War) There are many reasons why, the south slowed down the reconstruction of the United States, the main reason was freedmen were not seen as equals to the white.
The Klu Klux Klan was very significant and important for many reasons. The organizations primary goal of the Klan was to destroy the Republican Party as revenge for the abolition of slavery and for having a hand in the federal occupation and restructuring of the South. This was achieved by harassing and, if necessary, murdering registered Republican voters. Political murders by the Klan numbered in the thousands, many of the victims being black. Klan members often murdered black political leaders, heads of black religious institutions and any other black individual who had ties to a political organization.
Clearly from the image described, those two groups didn’t see blacks as their equals and despised them. Their purpose in creating this image was to install fear in blacks to keep them from voting and believing that they are equal to those in the ex-confederacy. The kkk had been using terror tactics all throughout the Reconstruction era because they didn’t want blacks to vote or participate in their politics the kkk wanted to keep white supremacy. For a while the South had enacted black codes which replaced the slave codes. The black codes restricted the freedom of African Americans, but eventually the federal government ruled black codes unconstitutional.
As the Ku Klux Klan’s membership grew, organizations such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), which fought to end racial discrimination and segregation, grew as well. With these two growing groups pushing for opposite ideals, tensions continued to increase. The NAACP pushed for reform and rights for African Americans and the Ku Klux Klan combated their progress with lynching and
In 1915, a man named William J. Simmons watched the movie, ”Birth Of A Nation”, which is about the reconstruction, but it takes place through the eyes of someone in the KKK. This inspired William to reorganize the KKK. He claimed that the group was dedicated to “comprehensive Americanism”, and when the movie aired in Atlanta, he put an ad in the Atlanta paper for the KKK next to the movies ad. He had very good timing considering the United States was getting an immense number of immigrants. The KKK had claimed to be “purely benevolent” and when World War I had begun, the group promised to protect the home front from many different racial groups.
The KKK used violence against Black Freedmen and others who opposed them to show dominance over them. The KKK used violence the stop Black Freedmen from voting so the Democrats could win more elections. After the Civil War the South elected ex-Confederate leaders to office. They denied freedmen the right to vote and passed “Black Codes” to restrict freedmen.
The main opponent of the KKK was the National Association for the Advancement of colored people. The Ku Klux Klan had several methods of promoting their agenda. One of those ways was lynching, which is hanging the people they were
