Even though “share our wealth” is known as a speech it was a program designed to spread the nation's wealth and provide a decent standard of living to all Americans. Long created the program because during that time America was going through recession.
Especially in Nixon’s presidency, he denied Johnson’s “war on poverty” and believed that the violence occurring in urban communities was a behavioral problem
During the 1960’s when Lyndon B Johnson was president the Great Society was successful. One example to prove that the Great Society was successful is written in document C by Joseph A Califano Jr. and he states, “Great Society's food stamp program helps feed more than 20 million men,women, and children in more than 8 million households. Since it was launched in 1967, the school breakfast program has provided a daily breakfast to nearly 100 million schoolchildren.” This quote boldly illustrate how amazing the great society is by providing food for the poor. Another great example of how the great society was successful by Joseph A Califano Jr. states, “The Voting Rights Act of 1965. .
In 1924, Congress approved a payment to World War 1 veterans that they would receive a $1,000 bonus for their victory in the war by the year 1945. But in 1932, those veterans decided that they wanted their bonuses early because of the financial pressures they were under. Congress declined, so they marched to Washington, build camps around the city, and vowed to remain there until Congress approved legislation to pay the bonus. The very fact that the veterans, after fighting in the Great War, were willing to go through all this to get compensation from the government truly shows how much Americans at the time needed the money; if they were willing to march up to the Federal Government to demand money, the possibility of them demanding money through Huey Long’s economic plan was certainly applicable. The need for money that existed amongst the poor people, which was essentially the majority of the country at the time, was so intense that all these factors played a role in the rising tensions between the rich and the poor.
In Smiley and West’s interview they heavily criticize both candidates for their deprioritization of poverty in their platforms and policies. They argue that poverty is a critical issue in any federal election because a largely impoverished population threatens America’s national security and democracy. The last time that the federal government put forth any large effort to fight poverty was President LBJ’s War on Poverty. Since that policy, no president has used their executive power to establish a commission entirely dedicated to eradicating poverty. The Great Society which was a set of domestic political programs in the US created by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964 had many goals, but the two most important goals of the reforms were to eliminate poverty and racial injustice. During his speech at the University of Michigan in May 1965, president Johnson first revealed the program in details. At that time, the society was racially divided. Only whites could vote which showed the injustice to black and native americans. The rich people were getting richer with all the advantages and the poor people were left with nothing.
Once the “War on Poverty” was launched, society started to break into havoc because of the sudden interest towards the impoverished. However the impoverished began to protest. The Poor People's Campaign (PPC) was created on December 4, 1967, by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), addressing the issues of unemployment, housing shortages for the poor, and the impact of poverty on the lives of millions of Americans (“Poor People’s Campaign”). Democracy allows for different interpretations as to how to legislate and enforce laws. Presidents are given the task to adapt and create a strategy for the situation they are placed within. While this may lead to controversial decisions, it has the ability to affect the world in a positive manner. Lyndon B. Johnson and Franklin D. The poverty line in 1929 was considered to be an annual income of at least $2000. Most people,at the beginning of 1929, were making that and living happily. But, according to Frederick Lewis Allen’s, The Big Change, the US distribution of income was so uneven that 60% of the population was living in poverty. (Doc. 9). With over half of the country living in poverty, businesses had to lower prices and that caused the businesses to lose money and lay off workers, leading to even more impoverished families.

Poverty is affecting billions of people around our world and the number is growing with each day. Many people think they can avoid the effects of poverty, but it is something that affects all of our daily lives. Many people see poverty as a person who lacks money, although this is true poverty is caused by many more things than being without money. Just the fact that one in two children live in poverty can help people see clearly the impact it has on our world. Poverty truly does influence the type of care and treatment a person will receive when they need it.
Poverty in America is a difficult topic to speak on; everyone has their own views and experiences on poverty. Certain social trends have impacted the society such as Family Dynamics; The way families are now are a lot different than families of the 1950’s-1960’s, In many cases both adult members of the family are working instead of the traditional husband working to support the family. Even with both members working full time it is still hard to support an average family due to working class wages not adjusting to inflation. Poverty has been increasing at a dramatic rate and the government is supporting more and more people with perverse incentives.
