My group has decided that our position on whether or not African Americans were free during Reconstruction was that they were not. To prove this we used 4 documents out of the 5 provided. From document A, ammendments were established and to be specific the 13th ammendment. The 13th ammendment states that slavery shouldnt exist within the United States unless as a punishment for crime. However, during the same time this ammendment wwas passed, Henry Adams was told to call the boss and madam , "master" and "missus",, which are terms that are usually used in slavery due to the owner and slave relationship .But
African Americans weren’t actually free during Reconstruction because they were initially not accorded the full rights of citizenship under the constitution, they were forced into submission by violence and intimidation, and were abridged the rights they had later gained by Black Codes. Despite the fact that African Americans were liberated from slavery, during the early years of Reconstruction, they were not equal citizens under the law. Even though blacks had fought loyally for the union, they were initially denied the right to vote (Doc a). The President of the United States, President Johnson, regarded black suffrage as something to radical that would “change the entire structure and character of the State governments,” (Doc b).
Ever Since the reconstruction acts were implemented, the union reformers have flooded my area. They have opened colored schools around the area and try to persuade my laborers to learn. As laborers began to sneak away to weekly lessons, I edited my contract to exclude all laborers from my plantation who pursued an education. The laborers have been scared into submission and the reformers have stopped in their efforts to educate them. The Republicans had provided equal protection for both me and my laborers in the law under the 14th amendment.

The Reconstruction Movement after the Civil War was a flawed plan from the beginning. When the Union won, the former Confederacy became the elephant in the room. The Union had a decision on their hands, and from that decision came the Reconstruction Movement, which was the plan to integrate the South back into a slave-free United States. However, improper surgery of this delicate decision would have caused a downward spiral that could, at worst, have caused a second Civil War. The Republicans of the Union at the time failed to deliver on Reconstruction, later giving it up, due to a variety of unaccounted factors and screw-ups.

The civil rights act of 1875, racial discrimination was banned from public facilities, such as schools or public transportations. The fourteenth amendment protected people against violations of their civil rights b states, not by the actions of the individuals.

The American civil war occurred in 1861. This war marked a critical turning point in the United States history. The war pitted the northern against the southern states. The states in these two regions had different social, political and economic attributes. For instance, the North had a booming industrial sector whereas the South relied heavily on the agricultural sector.
It is remarkably easy for people to boil down America’s current situation to that of a second Civil War in-the-making. All you witness in the media today is the polarity and out-right divisiveness of the country. While there is no doubt that political tolerance and political efficacy is at the lowest it has been, simply reducing the circumstances surrounding our current administration and our fellow citizens to that of a country tearing itself apart is not a fair assessment. When you look back at our country’s history, our situation is nothing new. We are living in a time of change and I am confident that once again, our country and its citizens will come out stronger than ever before.
