The pitcher-catcher relationship is arguably the strongest bond between two people and is unquestionably the strongest relationship in collegiate athletics. The pitchers and catcher of the Elon baseball team exemplify the importance of a tight-knit bond both on and off the field. My dad would pick me up from school, sometimes early, and we would ride the bart station 45 minutes to the Ballpark. After my first visit, I fell in love with the game of baseball. I was drawn to the game for those defining characteristics that set baseball apart. The individuality, constant strategies, the history, but most of all, its timelessness. Living in a world that is so worried about time and constant change, baseball has been the one thing I have felt completely drawn too.
Arthur Epstein is the girls’ basketball coach. He has repeatedly exhibited problematic behavior. For example, Epstein will touch all of us during practices. Instead of telling us where to go during drills, he will grab us roughly by our arms and move us around, never asking if we are comfortable with this acute form of contact manipulation. To be fair, he does the same thing to the boys’ team; however, that does not make it any more appropriate.
The idea of “innate talent” or being labeled as a “natural” is quite often tossed around, and has been a heavily debated topic for many years. David Epstein, author of The Sports Gene, explains how two high jumpers ended up in the same world class competition even though one had over 20 years of practice and experience while the other had roughly only a year of practice. He claims that innate talent is by far more important than practice when determining one’s success. On the other hand, Malcolm Gladwell, author of Outliers: The Story of Success, explains that humans themselves have more control over their success than their genes do and that this is evident especially in music. Based on the evidence provided from both Epstein and Gladwell, it is clear that Gladwell’s argument that we control most of what happens in our lives is much stronger.
She is my role model because she set high expectations for herself and achieved her goals. In her book there is a chapter about setting goals. She says that it is good to have big goals, but you also need to have achievable goals. An example of an achievable goal would be to get a hit that gets you on the base in a game. An example of a big goal would be to play division one softball.
As a candidate for the National Junior Honor Society, I understand that is it not important to only have good grades and help the community. Being in NJHS means that you have to be a role model to everyone around you. A role model is someone who is a leader, demonstrates citizenship, and has good character. One aspect of being a role model is having leadership. Honesty, integrity, commitment, passion, accountability, and empathy are some of the qualities that all leaders should have.
Ever since I was little, my mom stressed me to be a leader. By this she meant don’t be like everyone else and look up to a person, but be the one who everyone looks up to. I led twenty-two students during their first year of college to provide them success as students. I co-taught a class that focused on study skills, UNK resources, and involvement on campus. I exemplified team work by collaborating with another instructor. Through my experience as a Peer Academic Leader, I was able to hold two counseling sessions with each student per semester to provide myself as a resource.

Career Autobiography There are many things that I feel have led me to year number two of graduate school pursuing a career as a school counselor. For I while I tried to convince myself that a career in school counseling was not for me and ultimately everything led me here. My mother has been a school counselor for the last 25 years and I grew up watching her do something she loved. I went to school everyday and watched my mother make a positive impact on many of my classmates and this left a very lasting impression on me.
