Paper #1 The tension was uncreditable at the time prior to the First World War. Countries like Austria-Hungary had big ethnic problems and a lot of magyarization was going on. Germany had a lot of jealousy issues with other countries. One country in particular was Great Britain. Great Britain was a powerhouse and had very impressive military status. There were also some alliances going on that made Germany very uncomfortable. After the first two Balkan Wars ended, it was just a matter of time before the third Balkan war would begin, otherwise known as World War I. The three main causes of World War I were the alliance system, Imperialism, and of course the assassination of Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungry. Strap yourself in because there …show more content…
The agreements were the Franco-Russian Dual Alliance of 1894 (between France & Russia) , the Entente Cordiale of 1904 (between Britain & France) and finally the Anglo-Russian agreement of 1907 (between Britain & Russia). Germany thought Britain would want to make an alliance with them because Britain and France had been rivals for many years, and had fought countless wars throughout history. Chancellor Bernhard von Bulow and his political adviser, Friedrich von Holstein felt that Britain could turn to no other power and when Britain came crawling to Germany, they would refuse the agreement. They would do this to demand a better defensive alliance. Well, the Germans were wrong. British government, having no intention of going that far, turned to France, and the result was the Entente Cordiale, concluded on April 8, 1904 (Gilbert & Large, p. 92). France and Russia had already had the Franco-Russian Dual Alliance that came about because Russia needed a loan and France was still determined to regain Alsace-Lorraine from Germany. When this alliance was formed, the Germans felt very anxious because they were now encircled. Britain and Russia already had alliances with France and both nations wished to settle areas of dispute in the Middle East and the Far East. Instead of fighting over the areas, they tried to carefully assert control over nations. After …show more content…
This alliance is refered to as the Balkan League. The Ottoman Empire at this time still controlled much of the Balkan Peninsula and the Balkans had been in a state of turmoil. In the early 1900s, there were years of guerrilla warfare in Macedonia followed by the Young Turk Revolution and the protracted Bosnian Crisis. The outbreak of the Italo-Turkish War in 1911 had further weakened the Ottomans and emboldened the Balkan states. The combined armies of the Balkan League overcame the smaller and strategically disadvantaged Ottoman armies and achieved rapid success. The main reason for the Ottoman defeat in the fall of 1912 was the decision on part of the Ottoman government to respond to the ultimatum from the Balkan League on October 15, 1912. At the time of the declaration of war there were 580,000 Ottoman soldiers in the Balkans facing 912,000 soldiers of the Balkan League and the bad condition of the roads together with scarce railroad networks had led to the Ottoman mobilization being grossly behind schedule, and many of the commanders were new to their units. The Treaty of London ended the First Balkan War on May 30, 1913. All Ottoman territory west of the Enez-Kıyıköy line was granted to the Balkan League. This treaty also declared Albania to be an independent state. Almost all of the territory that was designated to form the new Albanian state was
The Triple Entente banded together and all blamed Germany for starting the war. According to Document B, France, Great Britain, and Russia were all pointing the finger at Germany, blaming them for starting the war. Due to the alliance's, most of the European countries became involved, not just Austria and Serbia. As stated by Document B, Germany was standing in front of Austria trying to help defend them, however, that then gave the other European countries another reason to accuse Germany for the start of World War I. Each alliance managed to stay together with defending each other throughout the massive
Because of Militarism many countries grew their armies which led to tension between countries about having strenght and power due to their army sizes. 3. Imperialism was most likely the third cause of the war because Germany and Italy wanted to have a colonial empire which led to conflict and disputes about land ownership because having more land equals having more power and wealth. 4. The last cause of the war was probably Nationalism because it only created pride in their country about which was the best, it was the reason that
During the years that led up to World War 1, many factors took place that potentially caused the war to occur, especially in the continent of Europe. In the Balkan peninsula, a belief called nationalism caused lots of chaos and tension between the nations (OI). Prideful Balkan countries would battle amongst themselves to prove their dominance as a culture. On top of this, countries formed alliances, creating an intricate alliance system that stretched throughout most of 20th century Europe
Prior World War I Europe had a long term of peace with in the countries. Lots of imperialism was happening at the time. Most of the European countries had colonies around the world. Although most of the countries were threatened by each other due to the amount of colonies each country had. In attempts to show their superiority over its surrounding countries Germany decided to build up their army, causing the surrounding counties to mimic Germany's actions The European countries where frighten by each other leading to the creation of alliances more specifically the Triple Alliance consisting of Germany, Italy, and Austria-Hungary and the Triple Entente containing Russia, France, and Great Britain.
At the turn of the twentieth century, Europe seemed to enjoy a period of peace and progress. Yet below the surface, several forces were at work that would lead Europe into the “Great War.” One of these forces was nationalism, and it had an explosive effect in the Balkans. But, nationalism was only one of the many causes of World War I. Historians and eyewitnesses have described the causes of World War I and have tried to assess the responsibility for it. Militarism, Nationalism, and Alliance were some of the main cause for WWI and Grate Britain, France, Russia, Germany, Austria- Hungary and Italy Had a Grate Part to Play in It.
it shows an example of how militarism was the main cause of World War 1. In the article it says, “But otto von Bismarck the Chancellor of Prussia who led the unification of Germany was sandwiched between Russia and France.” The article talks about how Germany was landlocked by Russia and France. At the time Russia and France were enemy countries and because of that Germany needed to protect themselves, so they spent millions and millions of dollars on building an army and navy to protect themselves even without a war going on. This article is one way that shows that militarism is the main cause of World War 1, but another example is the speech of Bernhard von Bulow where he talks about how the Germans needed to build an army.
Large alliances formed, such as the triple entre (France, the UK, and Russia) and the central powers (Austria-Hungary, German Empire, and Italy) The alliances gave military support to each member, but would also drag all the countries in one alliance to war if war was only declared on one nation (http://europeanhistory.about.com/od/worldwar1/a/World-War-One-The-Major-Alliances.htm). During the July crisis, the Austria-Hungarian empire asked if Germany would help them in the war against Serbia. Germany replied back and said they’d give them full support. Austria started to mobilize their army against Serbia, and since Russia was allied with Serbia.
Imperialism is the underlying cause of World War I because it not only caused bitterness among countries with less colonial rule, it also promoted the increase in militarism and alliances. Colonies were forced to fight alongside
Document A ‘‘European Alliances, 1914’’ shows us the different types of alliances that nations had with each other. Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy were known as the Triple Alliance. There was also the Triple Entente, an alliance between France, Great Britain and Russia. Alliances helped cause the war because nations would be against each other and they would also want to be dominant. Although there were many reasons that caused World War I, Militarism, Imperialism, and Allies were the main factors.
Because of alliances, Russia came to aid Serbia and that led Germany to declare war on Russia. Eventually the other countries with alliances joined
When Austria-Hungary annexed with Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia grew resentful as they wanted the territory for themselves and became openly hostile to Austria-Hungary. Meanwhile, the Christians were regaining their freedom in the First Balkan War. In the Second Balkan war, the Turks allied with the Greeks and Romanians against the Bulgarians. Austria wanted to attack Serbia, but was discouraged by the Germans and
The causes of World War I The many different causes of World War 1 were quite brief with excruciating fatalities. There were many innocent people who were just living a regular life didn’t know what was about to hit them. People like to say that there were five different causes of World war 1. Those causes were nationalism, imperialism, militarism, alliancism, and assassination.
This was most important because different countries would not be involved if they weren’t allies. Before the war happened, Russia, France and Britain had formed an alliance- the Triple Entente. All three countries think that Germany would be a threat to them. Russia thinks that Germany’s army base is too big; UK thinks that Germany’s wealth and navy increased to threaten UK; The relationship between Germany and France had been sour as Germany stole a land from France, and had been in a long-standing feud with Germany from then. Then, Austria-Hungary and Germany formed an alliance with Belgium and the Ottoman Empire joining in.
Introduction World War I came to an end with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919. The treaty was signed to create lasting peace. The treaty was negotiated between the three allied powers of Britain, France and the United States with no participation from Germany. The treaty 's negotiations revealed a split between the three allied powers with France intending to weaken Germany in such a manner that it would make it impossible for it to renew hostilities. However, Britain and the United States objected to some of the provisions because of the fear that it would be a pretext for another war.
The Balkan Wars were two wars that are considered minor in history, but have had more of an impact on the world than people think. The International Encyclopedia of the First World War describes the Balkan Wars as “two sharp conflicts that heralded the onset of World War I”. (Hall) The first began on October 8, 1912 when Montenegro declared war on the Ottoman Empire. Then, the other members of the Balkan League, which included Bulgaria, Greece, and Serbia, joined the war to help Montenegro.
