The Lummi Tribe opened the first tribal casino in Washington in 1992, however the Tulalip opened 5 months later and was widely more popular. These casinos came after a federal law permitted gambling on reservations as allowed anywhere else in the United States. 5 years later, there were 10 new tribal casinos in Washington. This helped bring jobs and establish a middle class for many of these tribal communities.
These new tribal casinos were permitted by the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act in 1988, which allowed for tribes to gamble on their reservations in the same way Americans do everywhere else in the US. Washington is one of 5 states that have exceeded $5 Billion. This extremely boosts the economy of Washington state. A political thing that the Indigenous casinos have in Washington and the PNW is how much they try to change what they believe are unjust laws. If they believe that a law is unjust or they want or believe in a new law they will lobby congress for a change. They are very effective in doing so. A social Influence that these casinos have had an effect on would be the amount of jobs and safe security that the people that attend and work there feel. Tribal Casinos in Washington have brought over 35,000 jobs. Over 50% of that has been non-tribal members. Meaning that the tribes are not discriminating against anyone. Not even their own people. An example of that would be at the emerald queen casino in Puyallup, it is tribal owned but it has many people that work there who aren't a part of the tribe. The tribal casinos have very good effects on the PNW.
