When communicating with the elderly clients, there will inevitably be situations where communicative barriers are presented. It is always important to remember to treat the client as normally as possible, and to show respect to foster a good therapeutic relationship with the client. Therapeutic techniques that can be employed to overcome these barriers include; approach the client from the front and maintain position in front of the client when communicating, reduce noise and other distractions, avoid eating or drinking when speaking, use a clear tone and normal rate of speech. Describe the communication requirements of different audiences Knowing your audience helps you to choose which form of communication to use, for example, if I was speaking to a child I would speak calmly with a slightly high pitched voice as its more soothing towards the child, where as if I was talking to a teacher I would speak in my normal tone, depending on my relationship with the teacher, where as if I was talking to someone very important I would speak in a polite, professional manner. Different audiences require different communication styles. When communicating with other people, it is important to adapt to meet their needs. If you are trying to pass on information to someone outside of your department, it would be impractical to use technical jargon that they would not normally come across or use. When speaking to a customer who is upset or angry, you should remain calm and ensure that the instructions you give them are completely understood in order to avoid further confusion.

At this time, we went to each nursing station on each floor and introduced ourselves from the organization we were from and how we will be providing patient care to the clients in this setting. We were educated by our clinical instructor on the different access codes in the building, the policies and guidelines, our assigned floor and the appointed personal support worker. Our role of professionalism as a nursing student was represented as we came prepared and greeted each healthcare and staff member.

According to Julia Wood (2004), “communication is a systemic process in which individuals interact with and through symbols to create and interpret meanings. However, Sheppard (1993) suggests that, in the nurse–patient relationship, communication involves more than the transmission of information; it also involves transmitting feelings, recognizing these feelings and letting the patient know that their feelings have been recognized (M, 1993)”. It is a two way process. The patient conveys their fears and concerns to their nurse and helps them make a correct nursing diagnosis. An excellent communication skill between nurses and patients is essential for the successful outcome of individualized nursing care of each patient. The ability to communicate
