Charles Dickens, author of the novella, A Christmas Carol, published on December 19, 1843, impacted Christmas in a way none of us can forget. Most people don’t give credit to Dickens for traditions we thought were normal! Such as how before A Christmas Carol, turkey was infrequently found on the table for Christmas dinner. However, Dickens didn’t want credit for Christmas traditions, he merely wanted people to be less self-centered on Christmas, and be more generous to the poor and the needy, and to each other. “They were not a handsome family; they were not well dressed; their shoes were far from being water-proof; their clothes were scanty; and Peter might have known, and very likely did, the inside of a pawnbroker’s. But, they were happy,

It was a very merry day in London on December 25, 1853 as the village was filled with laughter and joy as families all around celebrated the ecstatic holiday of Christmas together. Wherever you went you would see people of all nature without a morose (p. 5) attitude celebrating with family, even the most unlikely businessman who the town knew as Ebenezer Scrooge. After the visit from the spirits who helped Scrooge realize it was time to give up his grumpy personality, he was a new man who followed one general precept (p. 51) which was to honor Christmas and gave every inch of his soul to make sure it was enjoyed by everyone as he loved to see the jovial (p. 26) expressions of joyous children and adults which was brought by the holiday. In A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens uses apostrophe, metaphor, and personification to emphasize the importance of Christmas to characters such as Fred and Bob Crachit illustrating the power Christmas has to impart and bring people together. When Scrooge was with the Ghost of Christmas Present, the Phantom showed him a scene of Bob Cracgit and his family celebrating Christmas. We clearly saw that the family had little supply and cheap clothing, but that did not bother them at all. They still had the festive joy inside them, and toasted to Scrooge, not knowing he was actually there. Dickens used apostrophe to indicate that being considerate and gracious even when people aren’t there (especially on Christmas day) gives a huge impact on you and

Camlyn Takahashi “A Christmas Carol” Essay In A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens writes about Ebenezer Scrooge, a grouchy old man who only cares about money. He never felt empathy towards others, and didn’t treat them well. Throughout the story, Ebenezer learns there are consequences for his poor character. At first when reading the book, you can feel all that melancholy feeling seeing as Dickens is describing Scrooge. Scrooge represents or stands for greed and the total opposite of Christmas spirit. Christmas is supposed to be cheerful and and about having a good time with family and other celebrations, but when Dickens shows a true part of Scrooge's by having said by him “every idiot who goes about with ‘Merry Christmas’ on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart. He should!” It shows that he is not a guy to share warmth with any human being.

This reveals that changing is never impossible until you’re six-feet under. A simile is a comparison that usually uses the word “like” or “as”. Dickens’ use of similes demonstrates how Scrooge changes throughout the story and because of this, we see how changing all aspects of yourself isn’t impossible. “Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire; secret, and self- contained, and solitary as an oyster.”

A Christmas Carol By: Charles Dickens Comparative Literature: In the beginning the movie and the book are having the same plot and scene but as the story goes on it's like some part of the story was being departed from its original plot that based on the book. The scenes in the movie are being twisted just like to the descriptions of the Ghost of Christmas who’s visited Mr. Scrooge. One of the differences that I sighted from book to the movie is that the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come has a hand of skin while in the book the author describes the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is only a spirit or a skinless man. And another thing is in the movie, the part of the story of the nephew of Scrooge was not that given a full coverage of his story
Charles Dickens argues in his writing A Christmas Carol that the poor was being treated cruelly and the rich does not care for the poor. Pg 34 “We should make some slight provisions for the poor and destitute, who suffer greatly at this present time”. This statement shows that the poor and destitute were not provided with anything and they suffered a lot. ”If they would rather die they better do it, and decrease the surplus population”.
Charles Dickens, “A Christmas Carol”, is a classic novels that has been around for many years. During this time many different versions of this story have been reenacted in film. I am thankful that these different movies and musical have been made, because I am more of a visual learner than I am at reading a story. When I read the story I was not very interested and had a hard time staying interested in what I was reading. However watching the musical was very entertaining for me and held my attention from start to finish.
