Throughout the novel Lord of the Flies, the boys divided themselves according to who they feel is a better leader between Jack or Ralph. One of the groups consisted of Ralph, Piggy, and Simon, and is based on survival and hopefully being rescued,meanwhile the other group which consisted of Jack, Rodger, and the choir boys, who like to hunt and have fun and have no intention or care to be rescued. Due to the differences between Ralph and Jack and the forms of government the propose many conflicts occurred around who was really in charge. While each boy had different goals as a leader, they go by different methods of gaining control. While Ralph roughly demonstrates a democracy, the boys find Jack resembling an autocratic form of government.
This is a terrible leadership quality. A third reason why Ralph’s style of leadership is better is that Ralph knew what was best for the boys overall. He was always looking for the boys best interest and had good intent, while Jack’s dictatorship consisted of Jack thriving off of the power making only himself feel good and trying to make that last. After reading Lord of the Flies I asked myself a question, was Ralph a good leader or not? In my opinion Ralph was a decent leader, but he could’ve been better. He was a good leader in some ways, but he wasn’t in other ways. Some readers argue that Jack would’ve been a better leader than Ralph. I think if Jack and Ralph became co leaders they would’ve succeeded more in bettering the tribe and surviving more as a group.

They struggle to gather food and resources, as well as building shelter. They hope to be rescued but instead of working together, they separate into groups and fight amongst themselves, even resulting in death. They fail to choose a clear leader and the boys become divided because of this.
A leader to one may not be a leader to all, but a respected leader is recognized as the best. A group of boys stranded on an island starts the tale of Lord of Flies by William Golding leading to an adventurous tale. This takes place in World War II surrounding the life of young British Boys. The boys on the island vote to decide on a chief among themselves and Ralph comes out victorious. Although Ralph is not the oldest or strongest, the little ones follow him endlessly through the well-earned respect that shines in his leadership.
The book opens with a description of Ralph, he is a fair boy, well-built, and community-minded. He is chosen as leader or “chief” because he is the one who blows the conch to gather the surviving boys. Throughout the beginning of the book Ralph's leadership is shown to be very responsible and the desire to have rules. He has good communication skills with the boy by letting them voice their opinions and always sharing his. He recognizes the importance of building shelters and always has a signal fire on.
Ralph shows that he is a very charismatic leader by being able to charm those around him even if they have no prior knowledge of him or his personality. This is seen on page 22, “Let’s have a vote. Yes! Vote for chief… Ralph! Ralph!”
Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the US, who led the country through a civil war with his intelligence, strong principles, and empathy once said, “Whatever you are, be a good one.” In every aspect of one’s life, one should strive to have a good heart and be a good person. So, to be a good leader, one must first be a good person. Good leaders put the needs of others before their own wants and needs. They see the value in others and recognize the contributions of others.

The problem is that all of the boys favor Ralph as a leader instead of Jack. So Ralph already has an advantage over Jack for being the best leader and the most favorite leader on the island. Ralph and Jack compare as leaders because they both fight over the conch, they both want to be the best leader, and they both want all of the power, And Ralph is favorited over Jack because or hoe jack treats them Ralph and Jack would always fight over the conch.
Right after his election, he demands that they “have more rules” (Golding 42) and takes it seriously when someone is “breaking the rules” (Golding 42). Golding uses a metaphor to describe his leadership style as a “firm handshake” because a firm handshake symbolizes trust, firmness, and sincerity. Piggy also describes his leadership, comparing “law and rescue” to “hunting and breaking things up” (Golding 180). This comparison showcases two contrasting leadership styles and their consequences on society. “Well, we won’t be painted,” said Ralph, “because we aren’t savages” (172). There are many great leaders all over the world. To be a great leader one must have certain qualities including, being courageous, being responsible, willing to take charge, having all priorities straight on the important things, have determination, and many more. In Lord of the Flies, Ralph shows all of these characteristics and a few more. Out of every boy on the island, Ralph would be the best choice as leader.
