In the novel The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien expresses to the reader why the men went to the war and continued to fight it. In the first chapter, “The Things They Carried,” O’Brien states “It was not courage, exactly; the object was not valor. Rather they were too frightened to be cowards.” The soldiers went to war not because they were courageous and ready to fight, but because they felt the need to go. They were afraid and coped with their lack of courage by telling stories (to themselves or aloud) and applied humor to the situations they encountered.

What does it mean to brave? One aspect of bravery for me, is sacrificing everything you have and not being afraid to do anything. Bravery does not mean that a person has no emotion at all. Being brave means that you are afraid, but overcome that fear. Overcoming a specified fear gives a person courage and helps pass an obstacle.

Robie has the mindset that “you only live once.” Another example of Robie being brave is that she stayed at her aunt’s house alone. Courage is Earned! Courage can't just be said it has to be shown. In the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor, Mr. L.T. Morrision is the most brave, loyal, and kind person you will meet. Mr. Morrison showed courage by standing to the Wallaces, he moved Kaleb Wallace's car off the road, and when he stayed with the Logans even though he could get hurt Mr. Morrison’s actions proved that he knows what is right and he is going to stand up for that no matter what. Even though his parents were killed by whites, he stays calm and knows exactly how to deal with the situation.
This demonstrates how Clover is brave because if she wasn’t brave when the girl asked for her name Clover would have ran away. The final example of Clover being brave is because Clover continued to talk to the girl. This means that Clover is brave because if she was not brave she would have left in fear. This proves that Clover is brave and she is a good person for that.
Tituba had the courage to say no to the Devil and be loyal to Reverend Paris. Tituba wants to be free and go back home and she also demonstrates her courage by showing her confidence in Barbados.
