Do you have anyone in your family who smokes cigarettes, and does it impact you in a negative way? Smoking cigarettes is one of the most hurtful things a person can do to their body, and it can also cause many issues with family relationships. Not only does it effect the person, it affects the people around them and the environment.
In the earlier centuries, such as the 1950’s or the 60’s, cigarettes were glamorized and not portrayed as something that can hurt you. Many commercials were broadcasted on television such as Marlboro and Camal brand cigarettes. This made many people go out and buy them, which produces a big “boom” of the cigarette industry, not knowing all of the serious health effects it caused. Most places allowed indoor smoking inside public places such as; Hospitals, restaurants, bowling alleys, smoking lounges in schools, public transportation and work places. This was not as shamed upon back then as it is today.
On November 7, 2006, Ohio voters overwhelmingly endorsed State Issue 5, which banned smoking inside of all public places in Ohio, including all restaurants, bars, bowling alleys, and work places. (Ohio's Statewide Smoking Ban. (n.d.))

It would tremendously help keep our air quality clearer than it already is. It would help bring more customers to our restaurants and public outdoor places since many do not want to be around the terrible secondhand smoke that would be lingering around them. Smokers may have an easier time quitting cigarette because they would not be allowed to walk outside and smoke, they would have to physically go somewhere off the premises or wait until they get home to light up. As a popular trend, the baby boomer generation became known as the “smoking era.”
Later there were directed commercials and many companies were running ads. Ads had an impression on the teenagers of this televisual era. Smoking ads were very common during the early 1950s and aired quite often. These ads influenced many young adults during this time to take up smoking. Not only were the ads on TV encouraging cigarettes, but smoking was also very common among the Hollywood actors of the time.
Most people who smoke say they started young, so putting an age restriction, having a more smoke-free environment, and raising taxes on cigarettes will prevent young people from being able to get their hands on tobacco products or wanting to. With less tobacco use in the world, more people will be healthier and life expectancy will rise, not only because they will not be putting dangerous chemicals in their bodies, but the pollution caused by cigarettes will decrease. It would be nice to see less littered cities and states and have more clean air to breathe. Overall, the country and the world will be happier and healthier. Women were not allowed to smoke in public, they couldn’t even leave the house without an older woman or a married woman. Of course as we all know women can do that now. Women also had to wear nice long professional dresses when they were in public view. It was unacceptable for a woman to smoke in public. Many found it unladylike, today women smoke in public.

Smoking should be banned in public places for many reason many people do not like the smell of smoke nor want the smell of the smoke to get into their clothes. Smoking also affects the environment. For an example if someone is outside smoking outside near a restaurant and a family wants to sit outside and eat it can affect the family that is eating also if they have kids with them.
