Why So Many Colonists Died In Jamestown

There were 110 men willing to risk everything they had to have a new lease on life. These men were headed to Jamestown, the first permanent settlement. By the end of December only 40 settlers would survive. So, why did so many colonist die? Well many colonists died because of their water supply, their relationship with the natives, and because of their knowledge of survival. These factor lead to early death for most of the colonist.

When the newcomers arrived to America, their different ways changed the landscape around them forever. What we learned in school is wrong, the land was far from untouched. Powhatan’s people lived in villages surrounded by huge plots of cleared land that was used for crops. To avoid attack from Spanish ships, Jamestown was settled over a hundred miles away from the ocean. Many Americans and British have different opinions on what went on and who was right in the American Revolution. Americans thought they were right and so did the British. The American Revolution went on from 1775 to 1783. The very first battle, Lexington and Concord, was “a shot heard around the world.” Coming back to our opinions, were the American colonists justified to break off of Britain? The American colonists were justified by taxation, no representation, and the lack of land they owned.

Jamestown colony and Plymouth colony have are two similar colonies but at the same time are so very different. One similarity is that each colony had a large number of deaths after winter. One difference is that Plymouth colony had a good relationship with the Native Americans and Jamestown didn't have a good relationships with them. A second difference is that the two colonies came for different reasons.

Some colonists died at Jamestown because of the poor relationships they had with the Natives. First, some colonists died because of Native American attacks. This is significant because the colonists sometimes treated the Natives horribly, causing the Natives to fight back. Also, the Native Americans were forced to trade with the colonists. Because of this, the Natives retaliated and attacked the colonists. Lastly, Native American tribes could have told other tribes about the unfair trading. Due to this, this could have ended peaceful trading between the Natives and the colonists, and started conflicts. In conclusion, many colonists died at early Jamestown because of a horrible relationship with the Native Americans.

The Jamestown settlement was one of the harshest experiences for many of the people on that voyage and it was led by Bartholomew Gosnold. If one family member owned a big section of land the family would often fight over the claim on the land. The settlers lost all of their clean water supply and that caused them to have to drink salt water that carried diseases and illness. Many settlers could not handle the harsh weather. They did not know how to dress for the weather and could not find food. A lot of them died during this time. Lots of the people could not find food so that led them to starve. The second reason to why so many colonists died was because of occupations. There were too many gentleman in May 1607 and January 1608 that did not want to do any work at all. One surgeon in 1607 and 1608 was not good.That was bad because there was only one surgeon to help to cure so many people injured. In 1608, there was 51 occupations unknown that really did nothing as well. So many colonists died because of lack of surgeons and gentleman that did not want to help. You may be asking why did some many Jamestown colonist die? Well I am here to answer that for you. So many colonist died because of disease/ warship, lack of crops/ starvation, and non-cleaned water. As the English Colonist went to Jamestown there were many things that came along as they were settling at Jamestown and caused death to take place. The English Colonists went to Jamestown around 1607,1608,1609, and 1610. The people that went to Jamestown is a bunch of the English Colonists. In Jamestown the conflicts they had were a salt water intrusion, lack of crops/ starvation, Spanish warship and disease.

Looking back to the 1500s, the English had been situating settlements in Ireland and used a familiar model in the New World. The early years of Jamestown were difficult for the settlers. The land was hot, humid, and mosquito-infested, and the settlers were mostly aristocrats and artisans that spent much of their time searching for gold. Those who didn’t die on the trip, died once they arrived from diseases and starvation. In 1607, about 3 ships-each holding more than 100 English passengers, arrived on the Chesapeake Bay region of Virginia. Settlers were excited, given that they would be the first permanent colony in the New World. Most settlers were in search for riches and others in search of a new home. Settlers ranged from the ages of 17 to 35 years old. The first years for the English settlers were harsh and devastating. By 1611, two-thirds of the settlement had died and all hope was lost for the settlers. The 3 main circumstances that caused a majority of English colonists at Jamestown to lose their lives were the environment, the social and religious conflicts with the Natives, and the lack of survival skills.

In Jamestown out of, “the original 110 settlers, only 40 would be alive by December,” (Background Essay). This is surprising because the settlers only arrived in May! Close to all of the men were healthy, but poor. They had come to Jamestown in hopes of land ownership and getting rid of debt. Looks like the grim reaper had other plans. Jamestown is a place where a lot of death happened. People died from starvation, disease, saltwater poisoning, dehydration, and attacks from the Indians and Spaniards.

Many colonists died in Jamestown because the Indians attacked the settlers coming to their land. Doc B is a timeline adapted by J. Frederick Fausz in 1990. The timeline is from a magazine article entitled,” An Abundance of Blood Shed on Both Sides: England’s First Indian War, 1609 - 1614.” This is showing us how many and how people died in Jamestown between the years of 1607 and 1610. According to Doc B, of the 542 English settlers at Jamestown,

Jamestown was a colony that was established along and around the James River or current day Virginia, by England in 1607. They believed that coming here would bring them riches, be able to convert Natives to Christianity. But between 1607-1610 lots of the colonists did not survive to live a long life in the New World. I believe the reason several Jamestown colonists died was due to the lack of food, lack of water, and the conflict with the Native Americans.

There are many different theories and opinions on what really happened to the lost colony of Roanoke. Some are backed up by facts and science and others are total hoaxes. My opinion based on the documents, is that the colonists ran out of supplies, tried to leave the area for Croatoan, and sunk at sea because they couldn't build sufficient boats.
