In 2012, Nathan Jurgenson wrote an article call “The IRL Fetish”. It’s about how we disconnect ourselves from the “real life” and that we “logged on and check out,” but didn’t really “check out” from the technologies. I agree with his points of when people are on technologies people are checked out from their surroundings. In the first half of the article, Jurgenson is talking about how we disconnect ourselves from the “real life,” he gives an example of what we do with social media/ technologies. For the most part, he only brings up examples of how people using the technologies, but he did not really bring up his point of why he writing the article until like the last half of the article.
52% of teens have said that social media has helped their relationship with friends. A lot of kids are more themselves on the internet than in real life. They express themselves more differently on the internet than they would in the outside world. Teens are usually always acting differently than what they normally would when they are on the internet. We are able to express ourselves better over the internet, than in real life, because we may be under less peer pressure.

Cell phones and Internet have linked people from across the world together through interactive platforms like Facebook, Skype, etc. However, overusing these sites can lead to the loss of one’s own voice. In her article “The Flight From Conversation,” Sherry Turkle, a professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology at MIT, depicts a situation where a teenager who is completely dependent on technology as his means of communication “says almost wistfully, ‘Someday, someday, but certainly not now, I’d like to learn how to have a conversation.’” Even though he is at the point where he is completely unable to hold a proper conversation, this teenager’s texting habits override his desire to learn how to hold a proper conversation. This scrutinizes whether technology is truly helping people in developing social skills.
What social media is doing to teens Social media is a very dangerous place that makes teens feel insecure. Teens spend more than one-third of their day on social media looking at stereotypical images of “perfect” bodies and people. As a result, they become insecure about themselves because they are not like the people in the pictures. The media states that a perfect person is skinny, tan, has shiny hair, straight teeth, and completely clear skin. However, because teens are going through a lot of physical changes they do not usually look like social media 's definition of perfect and they become insecure.

Instead of wanting to open a new social media account children should do their homework, spend time with family, or go do outdoor activities with friends. If children have social media accounts they will “spend hours browsing and surfing the web”, they will only want to be using it all the time and they will leave all the priorities last (Keim). Now in this generation “our social interaction face to face is decreasing” because we now have advanced accounts that keeps us away from real life activities, and children are influenced by it (Smarty).
