Argumentative Essay: The Impact Of The Civil War

The Battle of Vicksburg was one of the most crucial points in the Civil War. It helped Eradicate the Rebels/Confederacy once and for all. The Civil War was fought for over 4 years and it lasted from 1861-1865. It was one of the most horrific wars the world has ever known and witnessed. The Civil war was fought over the topic of slavery and the issues it presented, and the injustifications of slavery. The Civil War was one of the longest and hardest wars ever fought. The Siege of Vicksburg was won by Union General Ulysses S. Grant. The Confederate General in the Battle of Vicksburg was John C. Pemberton. Pemberton’s troops made him surrender to Grant because the troops were starving to death (literally) and so he surrendered on July 4th, 1863. This was a major day in history.

There are many causes of the most devastating war in American History. We know this war as the Civil War. The first cause of the war was the election of Abraham Lincoln. Although an election of a new president may not seem as such a big deal, it was. Abraham Lincoln was elected president during one of the most consequential periods in American history. Abraham Lincoln was against slavery which prevented the south from expanding slavery. As it would do to anyone, it unsettled the south that their own president was basically against them. This helps create some of the anger that powered this war.

The North had beaten the South in the Civil War. The North won the war for many reasons; they had some advantages over the South, a great leader, and the desire to win. The North and South fought many battles before the Civil War ended. Each battle had a different outcome and some encouraging the fight and some ended in despair.

Transportation played a key role in allowing the Union to defeat the Confederate States of America. Transportation in the 1860’s was difficult, because it was fairly limited. Especially during the Civil War, with many people and communities wanting to use these things to transport goods or men wherever needed. One type that played a major factor were railroads, there was a major growth in the 1850’s so by 1861 there was 22,000+ miles of track in the northern states, and 9,500+ in the South (Railroads In The Civil War).

In this day and age, freedom seems as a “simple gift’ obtained by every American, but one forgets to think about those who were once unable to enjoy the freedoms one is promised daily. Back in the day, freedom seemed as nothing more than a dream to those of color. Everyday of a colored person’s life consisted of harassment and discrimination as no one cared to treat them as equals. Since many lacked care for the colored people, the colored people took it upon themselves to make a difference leading to the Civil Rights Movement. The American Civil War was the war that ended slavery. The civil war was known as one of the bloodiest and deadliest conflicts the United States had ever seen. The loss of life was an estimated amount of 620,000 men. It lasted four years, from April 12, 1861, through May 9, 1865. However, while slavery was a major cause of the American Civil War, there were several other major factors.

On December fifteenth, in eighteen sixty-five, the United States abolished slavery with the thirteenth amendment. Powerful individuals such as Frederick Douglass, David Walker, Nat Turner, Sojourner Truth, and Benjamin Banneker were people that longed to see the day that they would be free from slavery. Although these five individuals were never in contact with one another they all shared the same drive and motivation to change the way people viewed slavery for the better. These individuals accomplished their goal of changing slavery with a strong belief in god, a strong political voice and a light in them that never died.

This four-year war would become one of the deadliest wars in history. Throughout the war, 620,000 people died, with the number one cause of death being disease! The main causes of the war were: slavery, Abraham Lincoln’s election, taxes being placed on Southern ports, and stated seceding from the Union. The first battle was at Fort Sumter. The southerners were so angry at President Lincolns election that they decided to attack Fort Sumter. The confederates surprised the union soldiers which resulted in a confederate win. There were many other battles, however there is one that really stands out. The most known battle, and the deadliest battle, Gettysburg. The battle at Gettysburg resulted with by far the most deaths. With over 50,000 casualties, this battle would be remembered by all. The battle lasted for three days and it resulted in the confederates’ defeat. This battle is considered a major turning point in the war because it forced the confederates to be put on the defensive side and it ended General Robert E. Lee’s biggest attempt to invade Union territory. The Union had some advantaged over the confederates such as having better weapons, telegraphs, and leadership. Whereas the Confederates were able to fight on land that they knew so they had “home” advantage. The disadvantaged for the confederacy were that the Union blocked many of the trading ports so that the Confederates’ economy was destroyed, also, the confederates had many guns and weapons, but they struggled to get enough men to enlist. In 1863, Lincoln proposed the Emancipation Proclamation declaring the slaves would be free, though it was limited only to the rebellious states. By careful preparation of the document, Lincoln ensured that it would offer a positive impact on the Union efforts and to redefine the purpose of the civil war. The results of the emancipation continued to have an abrupt and profound effect of equality and social justice (Roark, 402).

The Civil War was caused by a feuding union, that knew it would not survive if things continued on in the devastating ways they were. No decisions could be made, people were arguing and weren’t getting along, and eventually the war began.
