What are Brake Shoes?
Brake shoes are found only with the rear wheels of cars that have a drum brake system. They are usually made of two pieces of sheets that are welded together.
When you press the brake pedal, brake shoes push against the brake drums – this action causes friction and slows down the car. The friction material of brake shoes may be riveted to the backing plate or attached to it with adhesive. Brake shoes last twice as long as the brake pads.
The brake shoes need to be replaced once the friction material has worn out to about 0.8 mm of the rivets. If the friction material is simply bonded to the backing plate without rivets, the brake shoes need to be replaced when they have just 1.6 mm of the material left.

Brake fluid in the brake master cylinder is necessary for the working of your car’s braking system. When you press the brake pedal, the brake fluid makes the brake pads press against the rotors. This causes the car to slow down and eventually stop.
Over time, the brake fluid absorbs air, moisture, sludge and other debris all of which makes it contaminated. Components like the rubber of valves in the master cylinder, brake callipers and wheel cylinders deteriorate with time and the little fragments that come off these get into the brake fluid. When air enters the brake fluid, it starts feeling spongy and this reduces the effectiveness of brakes. A brake system flush is therefore required to remove the contaminated fluid and moisture out of the system and replace it with clean fluid.
Timely brake system flush will help in ensuring the proper performance of your brake system. It also enhances the lifespan of your brake system components. You can refer to the user manual of your car to check the frequency of brake system flush service recommended by the manufacturer. On an average, it is required after every two years.
