On May 6, 1882, President Chester A. Arthur signed a federal law prohibiting Chinese laborers to immigrate. This U.S. federal law was called The Chinese Exclusion Act. During the California Gold Rush, many Chinese immigrated to North America. As gold became harder to find, hostility built up towards Chinese immigrates. Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 “was the first significant law restricting immigration into the United States.” Signed by President Chester A. Arthur, this act allowed a 10 year suspension on labor immigration from the Chinese. This act required that any non-laborers who wanted entry into the U.S. must have certification from the Chinese government in order to immigrate. They found that proving to be non-laborers was very difficult because this act excluded the Chinese who were skilled/unskilled laborers and those who were employed in mining.

The U.S changed during the 1880’s because of many immigrants coming from North Western Europe. Many of them weren 't poor. Stuff that made them want to leave their homes in Europe were, religions, natural disasters, famine, tyrants, and discrimination. People wanted to come to the U.S because of religious freedom, democracy, free land, jobs, family, and affordable transportation. The Chinese were encouraged to come to U.S to build railroads in 1860’s, in 1882 The Chinese Exclusion Act was made and so was the Immigration act, which was tax on immigration, they denied people who looked like lunatics and looked like they needed government.

An obstacle they had to overcome was the laws of their imperial monarchy of the time, the Qing dynasty of China. Their rule, which lasted from 1875 to 1908, had opposing views on the working class of China migrating to America and is what postponed immigration for many Chinese people. Those who were able to immigrate were second and third class and often came without much wealth, enduring the poor living conditions on their transportation, with small cabins and terrible food.

Immigration has been and will continue to happen all around the world. There are so many reasons for people who come from different countries and ethnicities to move from country to country. The reasons why these people immigrate is either they are simply forced to, due to violence and hostility or that they are in search of a better life for them, and or their family etc. Canada being rated number one in quality of life has been a goal for people wanting to immigrate. The Immigration and Refugee Protection Act ( IRPA) was established by the Canadian government in the year 2002.
