When you think about who discovered the New World you most likely think Christopher Columbus. There is a huge controversy on who truly discovered the New World. Columbus didn’t actually mean to discover the New World, he was trying to avoid blocks so he went the other way and found the New World. A place where the Europeans have never seen. However if Columbus did he led Europe into the Age of Exploration.
It is know that Christopher Columbus is the one who discovered America first, but surprisingly he is not. There were more people to discover America before him. So why does Christopher take all the credit for discovering America? Columbus takes all the credit because he was the one who opened America to Europe, and he broke the barrier for people to conquer the western side of the world. Besides he also brought disease to America and 90 percent to the population were ill.
On February fifteenth, 1493 Columbus notes, "All are most beautiful, of a thousand shapes, and all are accessible... Española is a marvel" (26). Christopher Columbus discusses in his letter to Luis de Santangel how admirable his voyage was. A voyage at sea lasting throughout the seasons, brought so much curiosity and significant information to Columbus' eyes. Throughout the journey failure was not an option and traveling leagues upon leagues was needed for future claims.
Loewen argues, “The authors of history textbooks have taken us on a trip of their own, away from the facts of history, into the realm of myth.” As historical events regress further into the past, writers may misinterpret facts that they may have studied. A story of discovery and friendship or a tale of conquest, murder, and greed, which of these are Christopher Columbus’ true stories? I believe the best method to teach American high school students about Christopher Columbus’ story is through historiography because historiography teaches students to compare and distinguish different outlooks from different writers’ point of views instead of just remembering misinterpreted facts. Historiography would guide and force students to study and learn history through a diverse set of historians who focused on the same subject and come to different conclusions.
In October of 1492, Portuguese explorer Christopher Columbus landed by ship in the “New World” which is today known as the Americas. Many people believe the holiday that honors him annually in October has great meaning behind it. However, I believe Columbus day should not be celebrated. When I was younger I was under the impression that Christopher Columbus was a great man and that he discovered America. We celebrate Columbus day because we honor him for “discovering America”. Finally, we should celebrate Columbus Day because he brought value to America. When I say "value" I mean he made America worth something. Not money-wise but more livable through goods and services for citizens here in America. Basically the "west Indies" people lived off natural resources and made shelter from their surroundings. When Christopher Columbus arrived he made businesses for people who wanted to work, and he made trade markets for people who wanted to buy goods from the old world such as jewelry, jewels, spices, perfume, etc; only the wealthy bought such items.
Putting aside all the horrible things Columbus did, he did help colonize North America. He opened up a new world where people could go to freely express themselves, it was the land of the free. People could freely practice their religion and many could start a new life. Another reason why people don't want Columbus day to change is because of his Italian background. He brought rice,apples oranges,bananas and coffee. If he didn 't bring crops there might not of been enough food. Also they would not have been able to get food as fast.

Bartolome de las Casas is used by Zinn for many of the sources of the cruelty against the natives, but even Zinn admits that "his figures are exaggerations"(). However, Zinn still puts Bartolome under much less criticism than Columbus even though the priest did his share in being cruel to natives; this was most likely because he wanted to make the point that Columbus should not be so heroized. Overall, the monarchy of Europe is truly to blame for sending the greediest men with orders only to extract wealth from the New World. Whether or not America should celebrate Columbus Day is a highly debatable topic, but it should not really be celebrated or called after a relatively cruel man. Holidays around the world are celebrated to remember and commemorate certain times in history, and to keep those dates important. For quite some time, Columbus Day has been a questionable holiday. Some people say it should be a holiday because we are acknowledging the fact that he discovered the Americas. In contrast, others disagree because of the ways he treated the original inhabitants of the places he discovered. This paper will argue that Columbus Day should not be a holiday because he exploited, murdered, and enslaved many natives throughout his journeys.
