The Short Bus: A Journey Beyond Normal by Jonathon Mooney portrayed the real meaning behind the definition of “normal”. Throughout Jonathon’s life, he suffered from the denial of teachers, family members, and himself when it came to his academic success. Despite the odds, he overcame his label of “learning disabled” and graduated from Brown University with a 4.0 GPA. Many other students labeled with a disability also suffer from the same aspects as Jonathon. In his book, Jonathon showed the mistreatment that not only he experienced in school, but he also showed how others struggled with an unsupportive school system.
There are few things more exciting to many kids than getting to go on a boat. Not only is it a great way to have fun and enjoy the outdoors, it can be a great way to teach kids about safety, teamwork and responsibility. When kids are introduced to safe boating at an early age, they are much more likely to become safe boaters for life. Whatever the age, all children and adults should wear age-appropriate life jackets – no exceptions.
Traditions have been sought after and passed on for generations; with no questions asked, whether humane or not, traditions are hard to break and diminish as they are often what a culture or community stands for. In Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery”, a story about the tradition of a small village, is painted in impeccable details of peace, and serenity on a warm summer day, as everyone follows the tradition they have known since a long time ago despite the true intentions and meaning of it forgotten. The Lottery taking place annually is like no other lottery, it paints the true picture of the horror that epitomizes the tradition that none of the villagers dare to question, despite it creating separation between gender and families and ruining
Many people feel they are being persuaded into doing acts that they don’t want to, or having judgments that they don’t believe in, all because people are used to doing what they see others do. In Chris Abani’s short story The Lottery, he was only a 10 year old boy when he got pressured into seeing a man burn and had to also spit on him. Langston Hughes was also a young boy in Salvation, when he had to lie in church, about being saved by Jesus. In the short piece Why Are Beggars Despised? George Orwell does not see a difference in beggars who live on the streets and working people.

and I guess I spend so much time looking for it that all the buses started leaving. I was scared because now I had no idea on how I was going to get home. I went to the school office and talked to some teachers in there, one of them gave me a ride home. I was very thankful for it but I knew that was 't going to become a daily thing so the next day I had to find my bus.
For the first activity of the segment is a story time activity. I have chosen the children’s book Koala Lou by Mem Fox as it is a children 's book that clearly explores the theme of family. The book is a great book for children of all ages as it influences a child’s growth and development as it focuses on the skills of speech and language as well as cognitive development. (CHANGE SLIDE)
Literary Elements used in The Lottery By definition the word lottery means a process or thing whose success or outcome is measured by chance (“lottery”). To most people winning the lottery would conjure up excitement and overall good feelings. However, in the short story The Lottery written by Shirley Jackson, the lottery has a twisted and horrific meaning.
“King of the Bingo Game” is a short story by the 20th century American writer Ralph Ellison. The story is set somewhere in the northern part of the United States. The story was written in 1944 so it is most likely set in that time period. It follows the unnamed protagonist who has moved from the South to the North. He needs to win a bingo jackpot in order to save a woman named Laura, who most likely is his partner or wife.
Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery and Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper are classic short stories that have a powerful effect on their readers. Through the plight of their characters, Tessie and the Jane, Jackson and Gilman masterfully introduce their readers to the harsh realities of cruel and unjust societies. Although Tessie and Jane are from two separate stories, they bare many remarkable similarities, as both women are victims of their worlds’ formidable and stifling traditions. Both of the women’s different approaches to their similar plights, as well as the treatment they receive from their husbands, create unique and intriguing characters for both stories.
“The Lottery”, a short story by Shirley Jackson, is about a lottery that takes place in a small village. The story starts off with the whole town gathering in the town square, where Mr. Summers holds the lottery. Once everyone gathers, every family draws a slip of paper out of an old black box, and the family with the black mark on their paper gets picked. After that, each family member older than 3 years of age re-draws a slip of paper again and this time, the person with the black mark on their paper gets picked as the “lucky winner” of the lottery. In this short story, after the Hutchinson family gets drawn, Tessie Hutchinson is declared “winner” of the lottery, with her reward is being stoned to death.
The villagers on “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson are afraid to let go of their tradition, the lottery. They are concern of unknown consequences that will happen if they change their old customs. So, for every year, the villagers gather at the square to do the lottery at 10 AM . The villagers are afraid to quit their outdated tradition because they think that changing their old customs will only bring trouble.
The Dangers of Following Traditions Blindly Why do people follow authorities and traditions blindly without reflecting upon what they are doing? The two short stories, The Lottery by Shirley Jackson and Examination Day by Henry Slesar, are perfect examples of societies that don’t question what they are doing because killing a person is rather an uncivilized and barbaric act. People will often be cruel when following traditions, beliefs, religion, or authorities. Thus, in the two short stories The Lottery and Examination Day, the authors are indirectly warning the reader about the dangers of not questioning authorities or traditions, and how we tend to be sheep that simply follow and don’t question.
When it is time for the students to go home and a bus is arriving, the bus driver would approach the terminal slowly; being extra cautious because he notices that they are children walking home from school and he wouldn’t want to injure anyone of them.
