The letter was understandably harsh and severe, but Banneker does this in such a humble manner, that his opinion on slavery can not be argued by Jefferson. Jefferson absolutely has to accept what Banneker is saying because of how he portrayed, and wrote his letter. Banneker starts the letter off with referring to Jefferson as ‘Sir’, and does this in every paragraph to solidify and ensure that he is being polite while still getting his point across. This was to make Jefferson believe what Banneker was saying, to show Jefferson that he does have respect towards him and that he is taking this letter seriously so Jefferson should too. Paine’s purpose of using imagery is to make his words and ideas easier for the continental army to go and fight for their freedom. Imagery is similar and supports the inclusion of repetition. Thomas Paine uses imagery to make things easier to understand just like if he were to repeat something many times to make it more clear. “Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.” He is describing how much tyranny is like hell and how hell is not easily conquered. He gives the appeal that we must not be afraid and in the end we will have great triumph.

The colonists followed Patrick Henry because of his motive and drive to do what was right for his country and persuaded them pretty good using Logos, Ethos and Pathos. Patrick Henry persuaded the colonists using Ethos and Logos the most by using Logic and Ethics to get the colonists on his side. I originally forgot to consider the European power factor in his timing and urgency, and do agree it was a strong factor in his timing. I believe more influential were the internal factors of keeping the union bonded together and not polarizing the issue that was already so much a point of contention among the Union and border states.
