The book, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and the poem The Courtship of Miles Standish surprisingly, have many things in common. The characters that are mere opposites are similar in more ways than you think. In the following paragraphs, we will explore the similarities and differences of these two books and their characters. First, we will compare and contrast the strategies and courtships of Ichabod Crane and Miles Standish.
In the "movie adaptation" of a "short story"; "The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving the character, Icabod, is a glutton, superstitious, and a learned man. He's a teacher newly present in the town of Sleepy Hollow. Icabod is a huge food lover also known as a glutton. An example of this is when he ate a slice of pie in one whole bite! As a teacher, he checked his student's lunches, but not so they didn't have any junk and only organic, but to see which one of their mothers was the best cook, therefore him to have dinner with them.
He was a star in the Negro Leagues (he learned to play baseball while he was in prison) however, his athletic ability decreased just before blacks were accepted in the Major Leagues. He is strong, hardworking, and tells fictitious stories in which he twists the truth. He is the breadwinner and plays a leading role in his thirty-three plus year friendship with Jim Bono. He is the centerpiece of all relationships in the movie. He is a father to Cory, Lyons, and Raynell.
Characteristics of Rationalism is strongly expressed through Ichabod Crane. From his extensive language to his briefcase full of medical tools to his neoclassic home, Ichabod clearly shows evidence of Rationalism in Sleepy Hollow. At the beginning of the film, a man is found dead in the river. While one constable wanted to burn the corpse, Ichabod wanted to use science and reason to find out the cause of death. This is evident when he says, “By pathology we might determine whether or not he was dead when he went into the river.”

In the film, Billy reacted very ferociously and crazily because of the poisonous tea, however in the story he did not react to it at all. I think the screenwriter alters the story to emphasize that the tea was poisonous. Another difference in the film is the screenwriter reveals Mulholland and Temple are in the house taxidermied. In the passage the ending is billy drinking the tea, however the film ends with the landlady revealing Mulholland and Temple are taxidermied and Billy is about to be.
In the both the film and drama versions of “Sleepy Hollow” Ichabod was lanky and unappealing, while on the other hand Brom was muscular and captivating. This was kept the same to help the audience understand more about the characters and understand more about why Ichabod was taken down by the Headless Horseman so easily. Another similarity between the two versions of “Sleepy Hollow” is that Katrina was stunning and all of the men in town were attracted to her. This stayed the same to help show why Ichabod and Brom were so fond of her, but also to keeps the audience wondering why someone like Katrina would even consider someone like Ichabod when she could have anyone she wants. One last similarity between the “Sleepy Hollow” versions is after Ichabod vanishes, all that is left of him is his hat and a shattered pumpkin.
